*Warning!!! Real Talk* - Unranked Playlists

I’ve thought about the outcry for “unranked” playlists long and hard, and the only logical solution I can come up with is for 343 to allow any/all players the option to hide their own ranks from themselves; though this does not mean hide it from the rest of the world.

Many of you here on Waypoint say you want a “casual” experience . . . and to all of you I say, well play the game casually then. Some of you say you don’t care about ranks, yet many of you will immediately proceed to complain how there aren’t any unranked playlists. If you don’t care about ranks, why is it that you care whether there are ranked or unranked playlists?

If you want a casual experience, I have to assume you mean you don’t want to care about winning or losing the matches in which you’re playing. If this is the case then so be it. It’s your copy of the game, and how you choose to play it is up to you. Still, it’s worth pointing out that no matter what playlist you want to look at from any previous mainline Halo game, whether the playlists be ranked or unranked, there’s always been a winner and a loser determined (occasionally a draw).

So, the only real difference with Halo 5 is that it allows all of us the opportunity (that’s all it is) to see our ranks for all arena-based playlists (bit of FYI - many of these ranks had only recently been hidden from us). So, if you truly want a casual experience, then play recklessly and without a care for the W/L result…just as you claim to wish. Ultimately, the ranking system is going to separate you from the hardcores anyway.

IMHO, the only thing 343 should be asked to do is to allow you to hide your rank from yourselves, because ultimately it is you who determines whether you play casually or competitively. It is beyond ridiculous to act as though a visible rank emblem determines the player’s attitude. The player’s attitude is up to him/her/you. That being said, I suppose 343 could allow you the option to hide the rank from yourselves, if that’s what you really need to have your casual laid back experience.

For the record:
Big Team Battle in H2 - Ranked
Big Team Skirmish in H2 - Ranked
Big Team Battle in H3 - Ranked

Let me know what you think. I’m genuinely excited to learn just how wrong and ignorant I am!

That wouldn’t work. What you are advocating basically ruins the experience for other (hardcore) players while the “casual” is in the “process” of being seperated from the hardcore.

The option to play with like minded players never hurts anyone. If it happens or not is out of our hands. The outcries have been heard already. If a playlist for social came out, it would only benefit the community, both casual and hardcore alike.

DO realllllly bad the next time you are ‘ranking’ (not sure how often ranks will reset though) and then just enoy ambling around the bronze league. It’s like playing with all those dudes split screen pals that are terrible, from what i’ve seen lol.

You know, Warzone was supposed to be that casual game mode. There’s no ranking, you call in whatever you want if you have that req card and blow stuff up. Win or lose its still awesome to play. People are complaining about it and getting frustrated. No, its supposed to be fun. I have a lot of fun with it, even if I lose.

Exactly this

I want a playlist where the intention going into a game is for everyone “just mess around and have fun” not be forced to go into a ranked playlist, try and mess around and get shot a hundred times while doing so and have someone yell at me for bringing the team down

i love it how people complain about it being ranked, but all you need to do is ignore the rank. Whats the worst that can happen? you go down to the lowest level of your division? Ow no im now just a gold, not a gold level 3 :0

BTB wasn’t ranked on Halo 2 or Halo 3.

What the heck you smoking?

Big Team Battle in Halo 3 is social. Squad Battle (6v6) was ranked.

It’s not about hiding or showing off our ranks, it’s about the system NOT matching us with players of similar and higher skilled-levels in matches on days where we are just simply too tired to play competitively. -_-

The problem with your idea is that the casual players will still be matched with the tryhards that they want to avoid in the first place.

We need GRIFBALL!!! Then there will be peace, and hammers and blood and glory…GRIFFBALLLLLLLLLLL
also BTB should be social and unranked.

I think there should be social playlists that keep track of rank but hide it from everyone…it should allow you to rank up and down through the brackets so that you will eventually be matched with people who are playing near your level

What am I smoking? Um…reality? You? History lesson coming at you:

For quite a while actually, Halo 3 offered both “Big Team Social” and “Ranked Big Team”. Perhaps you played Halo 3 from launch, and have the ability to go back into your game history. If not, google’s always there to be used.

If it’s simply about mismatched skill leveled players, then why aren’t you crying out for improvement of skill matching? Why are you demanding that BTB not be ranked? That’s personally one of the top-5 things I’ve wanted back since it’s departure after Halo 3.

There is another thread that says social playlists will be coming in the future and it’s not something as easy as flipping a switch, it’ll take some time to get it in order

Here’s the source from the other thread and yes I know it’s in another forum, but it’s still Halo community

also sorry if I sound angry or something… It’s just been a late stressful night and I apologize

That’s what you’re supposed to have right now, minus your rank being hidden from you. Perhaps the skill-matching is not functioning properly right now, but assuming they are, I stand by my suggestion in my OP - Give everyone the option to hide their ranks from their own view, but allow everyone the ability to see their ranks in any/all arena playlists. That’s the most fair way of handling it.

If you are saying you want to be able to go into a lobby with “like-minded players”, and all of you go into matches without any care in the world about who wins and loses . . . I’m afraid you aren’t coping with the reality of this very well at all.

Just like with Halo Reach and Halo 4’s BTB, unless you formed a full squad of 8 prior to starting your search, you had absolutely no idea what the other players mindsets were. You were simply projecting you preferred attitude onto everyone you were encountering, assuming they were all “chill-bro-myan-dude-bruhs”.

Now? Now, because you can see other people’s ranks as well as your own, you suddenly have this impression that everyone is paying attention to those ranks. Guess what? There are a lot of people asking for “casual playlists”…and none of you seem to understand the only difference between a “casual” and “competitive” playlist is whether or not YOU pay attention (or are able to see) your own fricken’ ranks. It’s incredibly shocking…becoming more so concerning at this point.

If your ranks are hidden you’re happy. If they’re visible, you assume everyone playing is in “must-win”/“do or die” mode. If 343 gave you the option to hide ranks from your own sight, would you accept the compromise, or would you demand that everyone be blindfolded so you can feel more comfortable? When skill-based matching is working properly, what type of experience you have is 100% up to you.

Unless there are two versions of every playlist–one ranked and one unranked–you will NEVER be able to know if you’re entering a match with people who expect a particular type of atmosphere (casual/competitive). Only unless we go back to H2/H3 style–having training playlists and ranked playlists–can you know you’re entering the area with like-minded spartans; and even then, you’d still run into a few tryhards in the training playlists…trust me, that’s where I started years ago. Mics were plentiful and plugged in back then.

Most of the time I care about winning and I love upping my rank, but other times I just want to relax. That shouldn’t mean I have to sacrifice my ‘tryhard’ rank because occasionally I want to be a casual. For me it’s hard work maintaining a Diamond 4 rank and playing to those standards every single game is tiering. I understand why they didn’t include social playlists at launch, because they wanted to try and get as many people on the competitive bandwagon as possible, but there really is no excuse for not having social playlists now. Also, don’t tell me to go play Wasrzone. As much as I like warzone I shouldn’t be forced to play like a tryhard every time I want to play more classic gametypes or I don’t have half an hour to dedicate on a single game.

Fair point. I suggest we all ask for Social Big Team and Ranked Big Team then. I just ask you guys to refrain from requesting unranked Big Team Battle (as well as other playlists that ought to come soon like Snipers) and simply leave it at that. That’s really all I ask.

I’m not trying to fight with any of you. I’m just hoping this thread can change the dialogue that has been started and focused on doing nothing but removing visible ranks from playlists that many people like myself have been waiting to become ranked again since as far back as Halo 2.
