I used a Warlord opener Sunday to climb the leader boards in 1s. He was imo the most effective counter to all the Jerome I was seeing. Went back in with him yesterday to see how the cost increase and health/shield nerf affected him. Those percentages don’t look like much but I really noticed it along with the pull cooldown increase. He’s so squishy and that’s a really bad thing for a melee hero, which is Arbiter and Shipmaster’s problem as well. I also really felt the pull cooldown increase.
I didn’t have too much trouble with Warlord in grunt and engineer mass against snipers. Ran into a bunch of Cutter yesterday, running his own Spartan Jerome opener. I just couldn’t hang with these guys. I could pull them in and get 1 vortex off but the Cutter players seemed to grab an early restoration drones to negate that and then could just run away and take me out from a distance before my pull came back. I also couldn’t defend my base from rushes with Warlord anymore either. Chopper and Chosen rushed and Mantis rushed. Here my T1 Warlord was also no good, whereas on Sunday I stopped plenty of Mantis and Chosen rushes when I encountered them heading across the map toward my base. Even in the games where I didn’t lose to a 5 minute rush, with all his upgrades he still lost battles he never lost before, even when supported by my banshee or rangers/hunter combinations.
In closing, I feel the nerfs went to far with him. They made him a larger investment by increasing hero costs, and at the same time lackluster in his T1 power, thereby decreasing his return on investment substantially. I had to hang up my Decimus and start going with other leaders in 1s. Pretty sick of losing with him after so much success. It seems that the Chosen is largely unaffected since he attacks from a distance, the health nerf didn’t hurt him. But melee heroes need to be damage sponges. If they can’t effectively close the gap with their enemy, they are useless.
What’re y’alls thoughts and opinions. Have you had success with the Warlord post nerf? Hero openers are still meta. I see plenty still, but my goto strat seems to have been made moot. Am I wrong? Let me know. Cheers!
I was actually running warlord yesterday, right after the patch and I had a couple of wins with him. He’s squishier, but still strong. I played against cutter and Jerome. They rushed both times, but I stopped it with warlord and grunts.
He took a hit, but he needed too. In the hands of a solid micro player, Warlord and Chosen could almost be as bad as Jerome, just without all those crazy buffs.
I hear you though. Melee heros need something. The slow ones need lots of health, and the fast ones need to do crazy damage. Otherwise, it’s not always worth the worry.

Just checked your recent games history. Those folks you won with Decimus against were unranked though. What about running into other Champion level players?
I also think colony was nerfed too much, June 28 patch notes…
I have not tried the warlord since the nerf but I think they should have buff all the other heroes instead to his level, minus commander Jerome and chosen

Since the patch, I only got those few games in, as well as a bunch of shipmaster losses. So, I haven’t tested him out too much.
I plan to use him again though, and will see. It’ll always be tougher against higher ranked players. But, will see.
The feel wasn’t bad though. He was nerfed, but I think he still does his job. He’s strong at stopping early rushes. And, with a few engineers, is still though to kill, but not OP.
