For anyone curious, I feel like 343 has done some magic - 2 of my friends appear to have unlocked the achievement now - without playing a fresh match of WZ or WZFF (they simply launched the game).

Confirmed on TrueAchievements by snickerdoodle that 343 pushed out a patch.
