No one really talks about the War Sphinx in the initial Halo 5 trailer. The War Spinx’s in the Forerunner trilogy are portrayed as under the Didact’s control, so will we be fighting them as a type of boss? However, the Librarian has made certain Forerunner objects as allies with humanity because she wants to help us reclaim the Mantle. So what’s going to happen with the War Sphinxes in Halo 5??
(btw it would be extremely awesome to fight one but idk lol)
I’ve been trying to stoke conversation on this for a while but no one seemed interested. Thanks for the thread.
Anyway, my reply is a resounding BOTH! Seriously!
In MP, it could be the equivalent of a Mantis, or if it’s in a “combined” form, possibly a Scarab counterpart (if battles get that large, that is).
But I’d love to play it in campaign. Imagine, you’ve finished clearing the courtyard of a Forerunner structure, and you walk to the final waypoint, where an inert unit stands. A cutscene initiates, and a Knight teleports in. It screams at you, then attaches itself to the cockpit of the Sphinx/ejects its AI core, and the thing powers up. Weapons extend, and it fires a blast which MC/Locke barely dodges, breaking free of its restraints and stomping towards you…
Insert epic boss fight twice as epic and less than a quarter as annoying as Tartarus was here
When it finally falls, the cockpit falls open, and someone notifies you that a huge air assault is inbound! You hop into the cockpit, and start destroying Phantoms.

^ That would be ridiculous … not necessarily in a bad way (epic).
The War Sphinxes in the books were Didact’s dead or composed kids (I forget the details), essentially they were possessed machines, I don’t think there’s a simple cockpit … think of a massive Promethean Knight with wings, or Watcher, or Sentinel, or Songbird from Bioshock. I’m not so sure you could hop in and drive one.
Wow i never thought of them as vehicles! That would increase the scale of the campaign to a COLOSSAL level… Imagine you could also fight Scarabs, a cross between H2 Scarab and the H3 Scarab to make them a little more harder, and even pilot the War Sphinx into space!
How would you even defeat the War Sphinx though???
I get the sense the one in the trailer is friendly, or at least not immediately hostile. I mean, compared this to chief in h4 who immediately draws his weapon when the first prometheans show up. This time he just stares at it rather calmly.
He may be a badass, but he’s not that stupid around enemies.
Well, that depends on what exactly the thing in the trailer was. It doesn’t quite match the descriptions, and is much bigger than it should be.
It could be a Seeker, a newer, larger, and more powerful version of the War Sphinx.
As for War Sphinxes in multiplayer… they boast firepower known to level cities. Might be hard to balance for multiplayer.
As for campaign or a boss fight… that could work. Though you’d probably need a Sphinx of your own to defeat another.

They were vehicles that housed the remaining consciousnesses of his children that were retained by their armour when thay died. They were described as having elaborately carved faces, too, so I think this would definitely be an intimidating enemy. More so even than the chilling blankness of the Mantis… shiver
I’m glad you like it, but ridiculous in what way exactly? I don’t quite get what you mean.
war sphinx in the trailer is bigger. but im assuming it maybe friendly because he stood there instead of running and jumping on it all cool and awesome like

Ridiculous in a Michael Bay-sense of epic monster robots fighting (Transformers, but cooler).
I guess Chakas rode around in one. Although, if you watch the trailer again, these things are big. Too big for what your talking about, although I bet they come in different sizes.

I’m going to go with a Seeker. Or maybe, there’s a slim possibility of it being a redesigned Guardian Sentinel.
In fact, it being a redesigned Guardian Sentinel would not only fit perfectly and symbolically with the name Halo 5: Guardians, but it would also fit perfectly with its alleged role, guarding the tomb of Mendicant Bias.
