I’m digging this Splitgate game. It’s not exactly new but it’s kind of seeing a second chance at life.
The game is very similar to Halo complete with DMRs, BRs, assault rifles, pretty much the whole UNSC arsenal is there plus a plasma rifle. Game types include Slayer, SWAT, Capture the Flag, Oddball and many others that we are all used to. Even Shotty Snipers is in there.
I honestly would be much happier with Halo 5 had it shipped with this multiplayer. The maps are awesome! They lean on verticality, and are mostly all symmetrical. They are top notch arena maps in other words.
The difference, though, is the portals. Just like the portals from Portal. It’s going to be what ends up ruining the game for me but right now I’m having a lot of fun.
What’s cool about the state of the game right now is due to it being cross play and free to play is everybody is trying it. And most are playing it like it’s a Call of Duty game. So a veteran Xbox/Halo player like me is absolutely wrecking right now. 20 years of Halo muscle memory crosses over perfectly to Splitgate. And it’s showing in my stats, even though I’m just a mediocre Halo player.
The bummer about portals though, for me at least, is that once people get good at portals I’m going to get wrecked. Most people aren’t even using them right now. The skill gap, however, is very, very high due to these portals. Check out some pro videos and you’ll see what I mean. And I’m not gonna be able to keep up, but for now it’s really fun! Hopefully by the time I start getting wrecked, Infinite will be out and I won’t be worried about Splitgate anyways.
I feel okay coming on Waypoint and suggesting Halo people move to Splitgate for a while because I feel like once Infinite ships Halo players will move on. I don’t feel like it’s a threat to Halo’s player count. It’s cool though, that PlayStation players get a good arena shooter. And I hope this game lives on through PlayStation and PC, because it is a pretty awesome game. We also need another good Arena shooter to keep Halo on its toes and keep it humble. This might be it.
