Waited over a year to possibly snag Halo 4

I’ve been a huge Halo fan for years now. And I’ve played every Halo game out there, except for Halo 4.

I never picked it up because I heard so much negative stuff about it. I always have supported the Halo franchise in anyone that I could and now I’ve decided to finally jump on the forums to get your reactions to Halo 4.

Since it’s been out for so long, should I finally cave and snag it? Or should I leave it be and continue playing Halo 3 & Reach?

All feedback is welcomed!

Cheers!

I’d suggest to rent it first…like from redbox, gamefly, or something. It’s ok in my opinion. Your views will only differ if you actually try it out yourself. Something that I may hate, you might like.

No I wouldn’t recommend it.

Game of the year edition. Cheaper and includes lots of content.

rent it for the campaign, just amazing, the rest is your opinion

Thanks for everyone and their input. I played it a few times on a buddies xbox a few months back and had mixed feelings. Then again, i’m not sure if I gave it a fair chance.

Can anyone provide any pros and cons to it? What you like or dislike about it? Especially if you’ve been playing Halo for awhile, i’d like your feedback.

Thanks again, guys!

It’s incredibly cheap at the moment. Even GOTY edition with all DLC is pretty cheap. If you enjoyed Reach, I can guarantee you will find some enjoyment out of the multiplayer. If you didn’t like Reach’s direction try the campaign. The campaign is arguably the best yet and it looks like Spartan Ops story will be feeding into the next titles so I would recommend buying, or renting if Reach multiplayer wasn’t for you.

Campaign and Spartan Ops are great. Multiplayer is alright, just don’t get any DLC unless you can get them at bargain price. (Maybe GOTY edition.)

Thanks again! I appreciate everyone who chimed in! I might just snag it and play around with it to give it another shot.

Here’s to hoping!

Basically this.

At this point it’s worth it because A) the game is far better than it was at launch; still has some glaring holes, but overall a much more solid offering, and B) the price is so cheap.

I wouldn’t worry over the DLC maps… you’re not likely to find them in regular matchmaking.

Overall yes I recommend it.

Anecdote: I stopped playing after a year and spent about 3 months playing Reach and Halo 3. They were both still great games in their own right, but they just felt too dated after playing Halo 4.

Sure the DLC is a fumble but in other ways it’s very much worth it- also you can always look classic while doing Machinimas in Halo 4.

You’d also love Ricochet, but you can find competitive playlists such as Team Throwdown.

How much is the GOTY edition now anyways?

I think it is worth it, especially since it is so cheap. As far as pros and cons from a Halo veteran: personally I thought this was the worst campaign yet because 343i took it in a whole new direction, but I’ve heard a lot of people who liked the campaign. I thought Spartan ops was pretty weak gameplay wise, but enjoyable to watch the movies in between episodes. But if you have a friend to play them co-op they could be fun.

Multiplayer is my main focus and I assume yours since you probably got a good idea of the other modes from your limited playing time. Multiplayer is very different from previous Halo games because once again 343i took it in a whole new direction. It is commonly referred to as the worst Halo multiplayer game to date, BUT it is still Halo, with power weapons, strafing, and shields, so its not that bad. It basically comes down to your personality. If your Halo has to be like the originals and has to feel like classic Halo, then you will not enjoy Halo 4. But if you just like Halo for its general feel and are willing to deal with some changes to the Halo sandbox, then I think you will enjoy the game.

Hope that helps.

Did you play Reach? Did you like it? If you were happy to play Reach I feel you’d be more than happy with purchasing Halo 4 these days.

The gunplay and weapon sandbox since its updates over the last year is probably the best in all Halo games online IMO.

Go for it I say, remember Halo multiplayer is always more fun with friends so if you have a friend or two playing 4 jump right in. If not hit up our recruiting forums for some locals to play with mate.

Just because Reach had default loadouts doesn’t mean you’ll automatically like Halo 4. I loved Reach (it had a lot of faults as well) but comparing it to Halo 4 is plain stupid. Halo 4 encourages a fast-paced multiplayer but with a lot of weapons’ unbalance, really different to the original CE-Reach skillful era. If you like Call of Duty, give Halo 4 a chance.

Now, about campaign terms, Halo 4 story is disgusting as it is confusing. I’ve played every single Halo game to date (except Spartan Assault) and Halo 4’s story doesn’t involve around the original trilogy, it has its own lore/backstory. So, if you don’t want to get confused (as many of us did) you should read all pre-Halo 4 novels which were released a few weeks ago Halo 4’s release.

In short, if you love Halo as much as I do, skip Halo 4 entirely and wait for Halo 5. That’s my personal and honest opinion.

Agreed but it’s probably the closest measurement if you’ll like it out of all the previous Halo games the OP has played. It does give a taste, although 4 launch vs. 4 now are quite different beasts in game e.g. now we have playlists/variants with fixed loadouts or Armour Abilities vs. no Armour Abilities opposed to just Infinity at launch etc.

It’s fine to have your own take on things, Halo means so many things to so many different gamers. I agree with your recommendation of reading the novels to compliment Halo 4. Of course you could just view the terminals outside of the game too (you find those in game OP then view them on Waypoint, or YT them). The terminals give more than enough background for the Halo 4 campaign story in game IMO.

I was just making a recommendation based on my friends, the ones who play Reach also continue to play 4. That’s where I was coming from anyhow, each to their own. Since the turbo update I feel the sandbox is more balanced than previous Halo games though e.g. CE pistol ruled all, 2 BR ruled all, 3 didn’t have hitscan on BR so overseas players were disadvantaged, Reach’s netcode and sandbox was great but the gameplay felt slowed down. I thoroughly enjoyed Reach’s take on having multiple chances in one engagement to beat or lose to your enemy but I think 4’s faster take on things is the real sweet spot for Halo, similar to Halo 2.

Agreed Halo 4 is a much faster game these days and IMO all the better for it.

> How much is the GOTY edition now anyways?

I’ve seen it advertised new for $20 to $25.

Really?

I might get it simply for the extras. :stuck_out_tongue:

I don’t recommend it.

Think ‘Phantom Menace’.
