I care. I like this setting and story and want to see how it develops. Although I would like to see these types of events and many others take place IN THE GAME.
The story specifies the filter will only maybe minimize the gas’ danger. I’m assuming the goggles option is more of a “it’ll help him see to complete his objective and get out as fast as possible, hopefully minimizing his exposure” solution.
The obvious choice is to use the (Snicker) GummyTube filter. reading through the story, I honestly don’t know why he would even consider the googles. If your being gassed, you put on a gas mask. That simple. The (seriously, who thought of that name???) GummyTube filter is literally the only logical choice.
The Entrenched universe is based off of World War 1 and Diesel Punk.
In real life militaries often give simplified names to equipment and roles. For example the American infantry was called Dough Boys.
Gas masks of the time often used rubber hoses to attach to a filter, unlike modern ones that attach to the mask itself or are internal.
With that sensibility in mind, calling the rubber-hose helmet add-on a gummy-tube fits in context. Same reason one of the chest pieces is literally called a dog harness.
I mean. A Gummy Tub filter is better than what soldiers used against Chlorine gas in the second battle of Ypre 1915. But I don’t think that would have gone over so well.
Yes, I know that it makes sense for there to be simplified or slang versions of a piece of equipments name, but from the way it’s described in the story it sounds like he’s giving the equipment their full-and-proper title, and not using nicknames. I could be wrong though, maybe your right and he’s just using the layman’s term for it. In the long run, it doesn’t really matter anyway.
Considering the environment is apparently dark, the goggles would probably help him move out faster, navigate out quicky. The filter would, at best, minimize damage from the nanocloud, but not get away unscathed if he breathes it in.
No telling where else the mist is being deployed however. I’d go with the gummytube.
Gummytube Filter, what’s the point of the goggles if the chemical agent gets into the air filtration suit? Having to avoid and go around the nanocloud means spending more time getting to the ship, and Kolby already wasted enough time dealing with the scientist as is and costing the lives of his squadmates.
