Volunteer to join the other team

There have been posts here talking about adding mercy rules and the option for a team to forfeit when a match is too one-sided. Matches like these are usually caused by a number of players leaving the game, such as 5 vs 5 becoming 5 vs 3 when two members of one team quit.

I don’t remember what the game was called, but a friend of mine has recently shown me a Mecha video game where players can volunteer to join the other team at or near the beginning of the match in case some players quit or lose their connection to the game.

I think that this would be a good addition to Halo, as it would help prevent these extremely one-sided matches from happening.

What do you guys think of this proposal?

Maybe if there was some kind of credit bonus for switching teams and finishing the match, this could be helpful.

Seeing as most players would prefer to be on the upper hand of an unfair advantage than make the game level again, it should happen automatically. However, it shouldn’t happen to people playing in parties to prevent the switched player from telling his buddies where the other team is.

It would be kind of like infection then, where if an alpha zombie leaves the game a survivor instantly takes their place. But I’m not sure that people would be too thrilled about that.

Some people don’t care about having an upper hand, and they may not even like it because it takes the excitement away from them. Sometimes I end up in matches where my team doubles the other team, like 4 vs 2, and I just wish I could just switch over to the other side and make it fair.

There are several problems here though:

  • An even number of people does not mean fair.
  • The maps could become to small. An 8vs8 going down to a 4vs4.
  • Will teams be split? If a team of 8 players goes up against 8 randoms? What’s then to happen? Will you put half of the winners on the losing team?
  • Can players use this feature to spawn kill even more? By sending over 1 guy from their team that can call-out all of the other players.
If this was a ranked game you could literally make everyone win, by letting 1 team gain the lead, and quit, thus letting the other team go over to the winning team. As long as the team you were on wins, you get a win, so everybody wins.

The big idea is that, within the first minute of two of a match, or before a certain amount of kills are earned (let’s say 15) some people on one team may quit. Let’s say that two members of blue team quit because they dislike the map, gametype or both. To keep blue team from being victimized, the game could offer a member of red team to switch over and make the game more fair. We could encourage this by adding some kind of incentive, as suggested by USS Galactica. This wouldn’t happen, however, if say the game had 6 minutes pass and the score was something like 24-11. If someone quit at that point, the option to switch sides wouldn’t be offered at that point.

If someone joined the other team, and everyone was using mics, then the player who switched over would hear his new team but not his old one. As for parties, it could either not be offered as an option or make it so that they leave that party once they switch over.

Like I said, the option would be completely voluntary, and I imagined it being implemented in social playlists where players seem to be more likely to leave.
