I have been playing Halo 5 since launch and while I never used voice chat myself it was nice sometimes hearing others on voice chat for stuff like callouts. I did hear voice chat plenty until July last year when the big server problems happened. Since then I have only managed to hear voice chat when I plug in earphones into my Xbox One controller (I prefer sound coming from speakers). Any ideas for what could be causing this or is it a normal Halo 5 bug? All other games work fine.

I thought I was the only one here who experienced the July server problems! It’s probably just people not talking or maybe you muted all game chat?

I know they’re talking because the headset icon appears above their character ingame and I can hear talking when I use earphones but I don’t know why I can’t hear them without earphones.

I have never heard any one on chat…maybe I should try plugging my mic in to see if I can hear any one. I usually never plug it in since no one is talking any ways.

Oh, that wasn’t clear to me sorry. I used to have the same problem. So you go to settings (in game) and to the audio/visual tab. There you set the audio source to speakers instead of headphones. If you still can’t hear them you do the same exact thing but in the actual xbox settings. When the servers went out it probably reset some of your settings.

I checked and Halo 5 settings were default meanwhile when I changed Xbox settings from Headset and Speakers to just Speakers it’s as if no-one’s talking at all (no headset icon over people’s characters).
An update on this, I found out that the problem was that I used the sound mixer in volume settings at one point to mute voice chat on speakers as someone ingame couldn’t be muted and that setting no longer appears so it seems Halo 5 still uses that now hidden sound mixer meanwhile games like MCC use other settings instead.
The sound mixer I’m talking about used to be accessed via settings, display & sound, volume, sound mixer. If anyone can still access this, it would be helpful to know if anything specific makes it appear.
