Unweildy mess on PC. I cannot, for the life of me, use this weapon on PC. The recoil has no discernable pattern, at least when I’m using it.
I get melted by enemies using it though. It FaVoUrS tHe ShOoTeR obviously.

I tap fire it unless they’re in my face. It has better range options then both the pistol and assault rifle but definitely not better then the battle rifle.
tap fire reduces the recoil significantly.
About as effective as the coconut gun.
Coconut Gun did so much more than the VK Commando. The VK is an under-powered pea shooter by comparison.
Peanut Popgun?

That would be fine and all but it still has to contend with doing lesser damage at a lower rate than most cross map capable weapons, yet loses to both the SK and AR in close to mid. This is also rubbed in by the fact it only has 60 ammo on spawn.
It needs its damage reverted to Flight : 7 headshot, 10 body.
If it gets changed to 7 shot head or 10 shot body then it would have to be a Tier 2 weapon IMO. I’d be fine with that because right now like you said the AR and SK are superior close range and the BR is superior long range, so rather than have a UNSC weapon fill that spot between the BR and AR just upgrade the Commando to something better than the BR / AR.
Another weapon would likely need to be added to the Sandbox to replace the Commando though. Maybe the Carbine.
No it will not be a tier 2 considering you still need to wrestle with the recoil and bloom in order to make it work for you, and keep in mind its starting ammo. If anything it will put it on par with the BR, as a lesser skilled counterpart which runs out of ammo faster. HMM I WONDER WHAT PAST HALO WEAPON IS THE SAME THING.
That’s right, you got it already. The Cove Carbine.
Commando is essentially a UNSC Cove Carbine, with added recoil and bloom to stave off its spammy nature.
Cove Carbine : 18 ammo mag, 36 reserve on spawn, 8 shot headshot, 12 shot body shot.
Commando (Flight) : 20 ammo mag, 40 reserve on spawn, 7 shot headshot, 10 body shot.
As far as Sandbox goes, these two weapons are essentially fulfilling the same role of a lesser skilled Precision weapon counterpart to the BR.
I’m perplexed as to why 343 didn’t just add the Cove Carbine back into the game or even have a Brute counterpart to the precision weapon, but instead introduced the VK. The VK is just such a shoddy, uninspired weapon in design, and worse in practice.
It’s fine. Stop trying to use it up close and holding down the trigger.
…I’m not.
Weird assumption to make.
I’m going to have to disagree, the Commando is balanced right now as a Tier 1 weapon, in that range between AR and BR, the Commando is the superior. If you buff the damage of this gun it will be superior to the BR and AR. At least the BR has one of the slowest TTK’s giving players a chance to escape when they are targeted at long range, if someone gets the jump on you with a Commando (even in its current state) you have no time to react.
The recoil / bloom really isn’t that hard to control once you figure out how to do bursts with it. It helps if you don’t aim in when the other guy is shooting back too, otherwise you will be all over the place with the Commando.
Like you said though, I don’t see why we needed another UNSC rifle that is so similar to the AR, SK, and BR.
(EDITS for grammar)
i’ve only used it once or twice since the start of S2 and it doesn’t feel any different to me.
Can y’all explain how someone is able to rapid-fire a Commando, legitimately, and not have any vertical/horizontal recoil? I just watched someone bragging about a ninja they did and their clip showed what I can only assume is some method of cheating that’s eliminating their recoil altogether for both zoomed in firing and hipfiring.
I find it harder to rapid fire zoomed in, but I don’t have much of an issue from the hip (enemies are usually within range).
I have far better control hipfiring as well. I was just amazed how someone could control it entirely while zoomed in. At least, until it dawned on me that they probably use a Strikepack or something.
As someone who went through the pain of wanting to like the commando I can tell it’s actually been buffed twice; a reduction in recoil and spread a few weeks ago and now it’s longer range efficiency this patch. Still won’t beat a BR long range, but wreaks havoc close-mid.
A lot of other changes are not in the patch notes apparently. Just to name a few that I picked up on:
Strange that there are “stealth changes” going on since release. I don’t mind but no harm in sharing publicly that they are working on balance
Haven’t noticed the Sentinel Beam nor the Pulse Carbine. Will have to experiment tonight. Neither of those were listed in the patch notes. I liked having to fight recoil on the Sentinel Beam because it already feels like a near-power weapon. The Pulse Carbine absolutely needed an increase in tracking strength and projectile velocity at higher levels of play. Maybe it is viable now?
I definitely feel the quicker Rockets pickup animation and that was not mentioned in patch notes.
I can’t speak to the patch notes off the top of my head, but the SPNKR buff was definitely mentioned by 343 on this site. I think I saw it on the support page actually.
Edit: It’s in the patch notes under “Global Sandbox.”
No it’s not weird and it’s not an assumption. You either don’t even bother trying to use it so you don’t know what you’re saying or you’re using it where you shouldn’t be if you think it’s a bad gun.
Uh, I’ve won about three LSS matches. I’m sure your number is like, fifty thousand times that and you get all the ladies or something but, you don’t win those without knowing how to use it.
It’s just, objectively not a very good gun.
