Visor Display (HUD)

Obviously, this is about the HUD for the player in Halo XB1.

What do you think the Halo XB1 HUD should be like? What components should it have? Where should things be positioned? Should it be customizable?

In my personal opinion;

-Bring back the health bar. I hated being unable to see how much base damage I had taken. Even if there’s no medkits, and Health recharges fully, I still want the HP bar to stay there.

-The compass, and map locations. They added a more realistic and sensible edge to the display.

-The last thing I would personally enjoy would be the edges of the visor changing depending on the user’s helmet. While it wouldn’t affect overall vision, it would add or remove or change clear brackets to simulate the visor.

> -Bring back the health bar. I hated being unable to see how much base damage I took, because it allowed me to change my actions up when I should be cautious. Even if there’s no medkits, and Health recharges fully, I still want the HP bar to stay there.

I like this idea. It’d be cool and helpful to know how barely I escaped death.

> -The compass, and map locations. They added a more realistic and sensible edge to the display.

I’d like locations to appear on the HUD like in Halo: Reach, but I think a compass would be a useless addition. I don’t like the trend of removing all of the HUD (like Dead Space), but I don’t like the opposite extreme of unnecessary or unhelpful elements, either.

First off, I don’t want a health system to return; it slows the pace of matches (some may like this, but I sure don’t).

I’d like the compass to return, and for VISR mode to be a standard ability. And I want the motion tracker to retain the ability to determine whether a player is above or below you (that should go without saying, but some people actually argue otherwise).

On a few maps, I actually did find the compass useful. Obviously, the location names are better, but even though it barely did anything, the compass was a good aesthetic touch.

Besides, it’s kind of the same idea as Halo 4’s clutter around the screen (The coding and whatnot)

And saying that you don’t want something because it will slow down the game’s kind of strange. I thought people hated Halo 4’s faster killtimes? You can die plenty fast in Reach and CE anyhow.

It’s not about kill times; it’s about the actual pacing of the games. I like my Halo to be relatively fast-paced, and health systems disrupt that.

One can understand where I’m confused about that.

But how is it that having your health displayed slows down the game? I never said you had to find health kits or it wouldn’t recharge; It would just show how much health you have left while it recharges. Not even necessarily slowly; Likely faster than the Halo reach elite’s Health (Which took 16 seconds) regeneration.

It also prevents people from being stupid and reckless, which I something I enjoy.

I don’t like health systems either, but I think OP was saying that health recharges just like in Halo 2, 3, and 4, only you can actually see it on the HUD.

Health bar: agree. I would like to be able to see it.
Reminder, health bar =/= changing base health.

Compass: can be useful, doesn’t “break” the game. I’m sure I went over this in another thread a bit back.

Map locations/callouts: I found them really useful in Reach - especially when I couldn’t quickly describe my location to my team. I wouldn’t mind an actual map though - ie. pushing a button displays a simplified top-down view of the map, and your current position.

Helmet specific visor outlines: No. At most, I only want ONE HUD per faction - allowing for one MP variant like H4 has.
Basically: spartan SP/MP, elite SP/MP, maybe one other, and forge.

He’s not suggesting to change how the health system works - he’s just saying it would be useful to players if they had a display element for it. Even more so in things like SWAT.
Also, Halo has always had base health, even when only shield is displayed. CE and Reach just have a different ratio.
IIRC, H4 was ~125:75, and CE/Reach was 100:100

So you’d like a health bar and a shield bar which fully recharges themselves?
When would u set the recharge of the shield? During health is restoring itself or after or even shield before health?

Actually, that’s exactly what I am trying to say.

Well that’s fine then. But if that’s the case I’d rather the edges of the screen get red as you take health damage.

Honestly, I’d like to see the busted-VISR effect from the last campaign mission on Reach implemented to an extent that could be turned on and off to offer different playability. Like a Hardcore mode that features breaking visors. Frag grenades could impale metal fragment splints in the visor and the more damage from the grenade to your face, the higher a chance you’d end up with metal shards in your visor display. Facing away from grenades would obviously render splints unable to affect your screen. I feel that’d be a really in-depth and neat playstyle to not only force you to not get hit by grenades, but not getting hit in the visual view of them, either.

Not quite sure how to feel about that, Co2.

Actually, I imagine that would be really good in a 64-person class-based Halo game, but not a mainline one.

Ah! Another thing I want for the HUD;

For hit markers and Grenade indicators to be gone.

@Above, hitmarkers should go, halo 4 was so anti stealth it was ridiculous.

Wall hacks, hitmarkers, extended radar… blah, bunch of mess

I’d like for you to be able to have a night vision switch like in halo reach campaign and fire fight.

But make it close to the ODST visor, but not AS good for Balance

I love the HUD in Halo 4. Halo 3 & ODST is when they started getting creative with it … I remember when I first played Halo 3 and I was blown away because the little outline in Chief’s visor was a blue highlight around my HUD. Then they added the parts of his helmet in Halo 4 and I threw a big ol’ nerd parade.

I’d like to customize my icon locations. Even have the option whether or not to have other icons be displayed…like a compass, health bar, ammo count, and etc. Maybe even get to change the color of the display to red or something else. Then have in certain game types of whether it allows customized HUDs or not.

Obviously 343 took the first steps toward HUD immersion by including the visor outline as HUD bobbing in Halo 4, but I’d really appreciate if they took it to the next step like you see in the Crysis series, where you can see everything you’d expect on the visor, such as fingerprints and lens flare and dripping water.

Finally, someone who agrees with me! You sir, go out and buy yourself a slushee.

> So you’d like a health bar and a shield bar which fully recharges themselves?

I don’t know, probably it would work the exact same way it does now.

I think I would like to have a health bar system back into the Visor, but not in a way that we need to use health kits and such. Basically let the health recharge it’s self once you are taking cover and when your shields are up, then you are good to go. Sounds fairly simple right?

As for visual effects, I would love to see stuff like Lens flair and water drips on the Visor. Especially visor cracks when you know you are badly hurt. No doubt the cracks would be gone when your health is back up but I mainly look at games like Metroid Prime and Star Wars: Republic Commando for these kinds of ideas. I just think it would sound pretty cool.
