Ranked in H3 increased the playtime I got out of the game immensely. I can easily say I wouldn’t have gotten half the playtime I did out of H3 without the ranked section of matchmaking, and I expect it did for many others.
It is also important in keeping casual players playing the game for extended lengths of time. The progression ranking system, armour and unlocks will only keep a casual player playing for so long, and once they get bored of these things they’ll likely drift away from the game.
If there is a ranked section of matchmaking, they have an entire new area to play in, with its own ranking system based on skill and a different, more competitive play style. Often they will find themselves enjoying ranked (as LOADS did in H3) and thus they will play the game considerably longer. Skill can be constantly refined and improved upon too, meaning players that are playing with skill in mind will play for longer than a player that doesn’t, because they will always have something to improve and build upon.
I’m willing to bet most ‘ranked’ players in H3 started off as casuals; they just tried ranked, and ended up enjoying it, and then created a new generation of competitive players that kept H3 alive for years.
In summary, a competitive area of matchmaking is important to not only please competitive players, but also provide a way for casual players to experience competitive play, often resulting in them enjoying it and becoming competitive themselves.
> You still get to see your rank and you can make out of that how good you are among other people. I like invisible ranks, no more people throwing their rank in your face or trash talking because you have a lower rank.
>
> I feel pretty bad for people if they only play a game because they want a higher number next to their name. You’re supposed to enjoy yourself. Yes, some people enjoy themselves when they’re winning. But being obsessed with a number is taking it too far…
>
> Again, you can still see it and you can still strive to be better, it’s just that you can’t see other people’s numbers.
If you don’t care about the number next to your name then you shouldn’t be playing ranked, and if you shouldn’t be playing ranked you shouldn’t be trying to ruin it for those that do enjoy it.
Visible ranking results in more competitive gameplay, which just about all ranked players enjoy. Making ranks invisible would remove that competitiveness, and thus a lot of enjoyment.
People are going to smack talk regardless all the time any sort of stat tracking exists. If it’s that big a problem to you play social (where skill ranking isn’t visible) or mute people.
