Visible Skill Ranks

I haven’t seen a single person agree with taking out visible ranks like Halo 2/3.
The only argument I hear is that it causes cheaters. This is a false premise.
There will always be cheaters. Please don’t punish everyone because of a small percentage of cheaters.

This game looks so great and the only thing that will keep it alive for more than 3-6 months will be actual ELO style ranks like in 2 and 3. I get bored in Reach.
I am a high level chess player and I constantly strive to maintain my rank and keep it up.
The risk of losing a level adds to the excitement by 10 fold.

So why take this greatness away from SO many fans eagerly waiting for it because of a small percentage of cheaters that will cheat ANYWAY?

Please 343i??

Actually I do agree with this fact completely. The ranking in halo reach left nothing to strive for, and Halo 3’s ranking was good for me.

In case nobody noticed, a boatload of people cheated for their progressive rank in Reach as well. The whole cheating argument is invalid.

Casuals (or rank haters since casual seems to be an offensive word now) seem to think that you should just play the game for fun and not have something to “satisfy” your ego.

This topic is really getting political. Why? Because people are trying to force their views on others. “You should just play the game to have fun. Scr ew ranks.”

I’m sick of it. The simple answer is to divide the playlists into ranked and social. Nobody complained about it in Halo 2 and 3, everybody complained about it in Reach.

Obvious answer is obvious. I just hope Frankie doesnt blow us off. Calling us “obsessed” does not raise my hopes.

You still get to see your rank and you can make out of that how good you are among other people. I like invisible ranks, no more people throwing their rank in your face or trash talking because you have a lower rank.

I feel pretty bad for people if they only play a game because they want a higher number next to their name. You’re supposed to enjoy yourself. Yes, some people enjoy themselves when they’re winning. But being obsessed with a number is taking it too far…

Again, you can still see it and you can still strive to be better, it’s just that you can’t see other people’s numbers.

Oh and let me help you with your love for numbers, maybe you feel better this way;

Just had to do it…

Ranked in H3 increased the playtime I got out of the game immensely. I can easily say I wouldn’t have gotten half the playtime I did out of H3 without the ranked section of matchmaking, and I expect it did for many others.

It is also important in keeping casual players playing the game for extended lengths of time. The progression ranking system, armour and unlocks will only keep a casual player playing for so long, and once they get bored of these things they’ll likely drift away from the game.

If there is a ranked section of matchmaking, they have an entire new area to play in, with its own ranking system based on skill and a different, more competitive play style. Often they will find themselves enjoying ranked (as LOADS did in H3) and thus they will play the game considerably longer. Skill can be constantly refined and improved upon too, meaning players that are playing with skill in mind will play for longer than a player that doesn’t, because they will always have something to improve and build upon.

I’m willing to bet most ‘ranked’ players in H3 started off as casuals; they just tried ranked, and ended up enjoying it, and then created a new generation of competitive players that kept H3 alive for years.

In summary, a competitive area of matchmaking is important to not only please competitive players, but also provide a way for casual players to experience competitive play, often resulting in them enjoying it and becoming competitive themselves.

If you don’t care about the number next to your name then you shouldn’t be playing ranked, and if you shouldn’t be playing ranked you shouldn’t be trying to ruin it for those that do enjoy it.

Visible ranking results in more competitive gameplay, which just about all ranked players enjoy. Making ranks invisible would remove that competitiveness, and thus a lot of enjoyment.

People are going to smack talk regardless all the time any sort of stat tracking exists. If it’s that big a problem to you play social (where skill ranking isn’t visible) or mute people.

Reach had a trueskill ranking system, it just wasn’t visible, let’s face it… The Halo 3 ranks were mostly for bragging rights.

Something just gives me a feeling that 343i havnt revealed the ranking system yet because we competitive players won’t like it . Then again specialization descriptions basically confirmed 1-50 . (Shrugs)

I dont think that they have said that ranks will be unvisible.

I am a competitive player, I go into a game with the thought that I will win it. I just don’t care for a number or a medal next to my name. I know how good I am, some random gimmick doesn’t have to tell me that, the gameplay speaks for itself.

The very thing that makes ranked games competitive is the visibility of the rank. This competitiveness would be undoubtedly lost if the visibility of ranks was decreased or removed.

If you don’t care for the competitive gameplay then you probably aren’t a ranked player in the normal sense of the term.

What? Did you even read? I play to win, a number doesn’t tell me that I should win, I tell that myself. The win gives me a good feeling, I couldn’t care less about the rank…

A number next to your name is more accurate than how you play?

I strive to win and I do so, but I couldn’t care less about some numbers/rank/pixels next to my name…

I feel bad for people who think you can only strive for something in a video game.

And I can not understand why it bothers you so much that some people do.

Pretty much this

> What? Did you even read? I play to win, a number doesn’t tell me that I should win, I tell that myself. The win gives me a good feeling, I couldn’t care less about the rank…

but when you are beating bad / easy players there is nothing satisfying about it. Ranked allows you to face good opponents that make winning satisfying. This usually includes visible skill ranks so you know you have beaten a worthy opponent.

The only satisfying matches in reach where winning felt somewhat good was when I beat whole teams after all my teammates had quit … thats rally about it. Nowhere close to facing fellow 50’s in Halo 3 ranked and winning.

It is their choice not yours

Because those people keep throwing it at you. They say they don’t get appriciated, that 343 is not catering to their needs. Just like this topic, we’ve had countless of discussions about this, yet it’s just never good enough for them…
