Visible Ranking System

Yes, this discussion has been drilled over and over, but I still feel, stronger then ever, that a visible ranking system, one similar to the H3 and H2 system, should be implemented in Halo 4.

Why?
Halo in its core is a team based game, even though some try hard for a good K/D, it means nothing if you lose. Ranked playlists are meant to be exactly what the titles says, ranked playlists. You win, you rank up, you lose, you rank down. Ranks give players something to work towards, a reason to become a better player. It’s a gratifying feeling when you reach a rank not because of how much you play, but because of how good you are.

How?
Like in Halo 3, matchmaking should be dived into two parts, ranked and social. In both playlists you can earn XP/Credits the same way, although while playing ranked, you play with people that have a similar rank as you. This ranking system can vary, but it would be traditional to have it as a 1-50 system not based of trueskill, but of games won and lost, similar to halo 2’s ranking system. Although this ranked 1-50 system DOES NOT dictate your overall rank, as it did in Halo 3. Your overall rank should be dictated by you total XP, while your ranked playlist ranks should be visible when viewing your ingame profile, perhaps on a dedicated tab.

Cons.
It is very clear why the ranked system is looked down upon, cheating. I feel that it can be minimized by adding seasons that reset the ranks defeating the purpose of 3rd party account trading. Not only would this defeat the purpose of ‘host booting’ for a rank, but it would also greatly increase the risk of ‘host booting’ as one would have to constantly cheat to keep a rank. Hopefully this is looked at as a positive, by giving admins a larger sample of the games one would have to cheat in, making bans easier and more threatening.

I hope there are people out there who feel as strongly as I do about a need of a visible ranking system in Halo 4. We are the community, we give the developers their power, but they should not be the only ones dictating the rules of the game. If you feel as strongly as I do about this topic, please help raise awareness, and just maybe we can make the change, that for some of us, will make or break Halo 4.

Thank you for your contribution.

This topic is getting really exausted, so I’m going to rush to the simplest solution.

Make the rank visible only to you, nobody else. take an improved version of the 1-50(or a similar system) and make it to where only you can see your rank, nobody else.

This prevents mass amounts of cheating, gets rid of the high level account market, and overall lessens any form of abuse to the system, while also giving the player a goal to work to so they don’t feel pointless. I know that some people believe that this is pointless unless others can see your rank(so they can gloat or compare it to others), but its better than nothing. And if your friends really care, then you can just tell them your rank, or send them a picture of it. It does you no good to lie about such a thing anyways.

Its better than fully visible because it has massly reduced abuse, and better than invisible because it can still offer some form of skillful goal for those who wish to pursue it. And to those who say “no point if nobody else can see it,” tough luck. You don’t need a witness to your skill.

If The Rank is invisible then show should progressive/ social Rank

As they both have pros and cons

Or they both need to be visible and make everyone happy

A great Ranking system will keep this game going for years – A bad Ranking system will make it short lived

We just have to wait and see, dont we? Its not like they gonna change it now. 3 months and some till the release

we can only hope something on screen will tell you how good a person is.

@kanku13
You are right, but there is a simple paradox that happens in society. When you see someone has something better then you, a higher rank, generally people will strive to surpass that player, become better, intern fueling the ranked playlist, and the competitive scene of the game. If make the rank visible only to yourself, you eliminate competition. There is no reason to better your rank, other then to see how good your standing is vs. the system. Since we are no longer in the N64 century, competition vs. your highest score gets boring rather quickly, you want others to compete with, at least I do. And for competition to exist, you need a standard, a rank, something people can relate to, something you can compete to improve. In the past two installments to the Halo franchise, this standard came in the form of a visible 1-50 rank that satisfied me, and hundreds of people I’ve played with. It gave some of us reason to play, others used it as a tool to play with people as skilled as them, to improve. And to see it gone from Halo 4 would drastically impact the community in a negative way.

@I2ichie
Hopefully there is something more then a visible K/D, as its an extreme, and is a rather poor way of judging overall skill.

Yeah, I also think that making ranks only visible to the player him/herself would be the best solution. Players will still have a rank to work towards, and people won’t be able to insult others because of their rank.

we aren’t tired of beating the dead horse anymore?

I don’t even…

There is already a progression system announced in Halo 4, please let this go.

Then watch Halo 4 do better than Halo Reach but still a shawdow to Halos past. I’m sorry but I can’t see a competetive game since Halo 2 do well as a completely social game.

You can’t know that until it comes out.

What about one which is only visible once a month?

We really don’t need yet ANOTHER thread on this. :confused:
