Some things that very much bug me are things that are done for the sake of gameplay at the expense of realism and believability, like…
It’s over 500 years in the future, and…
Shotguns are still pump-action.- Warthogs don’t protect the driver, gunner, or passenger. Yes we need to be able to shoot them out of it but modern Humvees are more protective than Warthogs.- Tanks are slower than they are today- We still don’t have flying cars- We still use modern-style projectile bullets when they already have Spartan Lasers. Just make lots of smaller spartan lasers and you’ll actually hurt Covenant for once.- Spaceships look like guns, because teenage male target demographic.- There has to be at least one naked chick, because teenage male target demographic.- Bad guys come in easily recognizable shapes, sizes, and colors with pre-defined combat roles and weaknesses that never cross over. Small weak guy, big strong guy, giant slow guy. Seriously, why don’t all covenant use energy shields? Hunters with overshield would be unstoppable (oh wait that’s why).- Allies are dumb and weak to make you do all the work.
That’s all I can think of right now. Just wanted to share. Do you know of anything I could have missed?
I think your list is pretty spot-on. Not to sure about how the ships look like guns. The only ship I can think of that even resembles a gun is the FuD type ships. I don’t really mind about the whole “500 years in the future but we still are using guns that shoot bullets”. Lastly, I don’t think Flying cars really belongs in Halo regardless. Seems silly, imagine a hover warthog. I really agree about how stupid the friendly AI is stupid. I understand how we’re supposed to do all the work and everything but as a fan of the marines and ODST’s I hate how the AI is stupid as Dirt while in the books and lore they are supposed to be the best of the best. Even playing as the Arbiter in Halo 2 one of the Spec Ops elites killed me with a sticky grenade. Regardless, I still love Halo.
Almost your entire list, while correct, is necessary IMO for gameplay purposes. Halo needs to be unique and diverse, and the enemy design needs to be so in order to add layers of strategy to the SP, instead of like Destiny where you just shoot anything that moves with the exact same weapon. Halo isn’t supposed to be the most immersive game, gameplay is more its forte. Leave the immersion stuff to Valve haha
I made a thread just like this in the “halo universe” section, but it was a long time ago. Halo should have taken place in 2252 because then it would make more sense why we are still using battle rifles and tanks. Something is very wrong when it is 500 years in the future and you have interstellar spaceships, but still use shotguns and magnums. Still love this game though. I’m listening to the halo 3 menu music right now while waiting for a damn game in halo MCC, and the nostalgia is beautiful. Even though this series’ story has it quirks, I still love this game.
Ya I don’t mind the little differences even for the time, I understand why Bungie did it and it doesn’t bother me, the story itself has me very immersed when going through, loved the series and all th games and books for the most part, (cough traviss) books cough, but everything else is great mu sic is amazing too.
