Ever since Halo 3 and the Spartan Laser I believe vehicular combat has become more and more obsolete.
I loved rockets being the only stop to vehicles. Halo 2 had it done right. Rockets that locked on provided a good way to destroy vehicles that were nimble but without being overpowered as they were able to be dodged quite regularly I found.
With the addition of the Spartan Laser to Halo 3, It made destroying a vehicle idiot proof. Sighting in on a vehicle and blowing it up was very easy because the laser that would designate the target rarely worked and rarely gave warning to the vehicle.
Now with halo 4, there is the Spartan laser and…you can spawn with the plasma pistol. I am not against the plasma pistol’s overcharge disabling a vehicle temporarily, but in Halo 3 the Plasma Pistols were scarce to come by and only a couple on the map existed. Now in Halo 4 everyone can spawn with this weapon and using a vehicle is now a death wish granted the enemy team chooses to spawn with them…which everyone does when they play BTB or Dominion. Warthog’s can rarely roll around the map for longer than a minute and can barely rack up 4 or 5 kills because the hog gets charged by 3 Spartans with plasma pistols blazing and plasma grenades being thrown.
[TL;DR]
Basically, my beef is with the ability to spawn with the Plasma Pistol. It destroys the iconic vehicular combat that is a very major part of the halo multiplayer. No longer does it take another Vehicle or rocket to destroy a vehicle…anyone can spawn with a Plasma Pistol and grenades and destroy a vehicle.
What does the community think? Do you agree with me or do you feel that being able to spawn with a Plasma Pistol was better for the game?

I was in no way saying Halo 2 was the best multiplayer; I was expressing how I think vehicular combat was probably the best of all the Halo’s with its lack of Spartan Laser and being able to spawn with Plasma Pistol’s and Plasma Grenades
I agree that a primary weapon should not take out a vehicle so quickly…they really have made using a vehicle a death wish and have ruined the experience of big vehicle battles.

I only system linked it with friends back then , xbl and never even thought about forums so i LOVED IT, was always a great way to screw off with a few other people
I think people talking -Yoink- on games on forums and stuff influences the thoughts of others and causes everyone to nick pick a game to death.
Vehicles take slightly too much damage from small arms fire. That’s defiantly there.
Grenades are a Huge issue in the game. Halo vets may think they are grenade starved since they cannot pick up grenades without a perk, but they are very mistaken.
Grenades are a reward for dying in this game. Objective game types are a huge problem in this regard. People worried about kd know to stay away from objectives because of grenade spam. People spawn, dump grenades, die, then repeat the whole match.
The same goes for btb… Things like the scorpion tank are too fragile not because of rockets or lasers, but because they have an endless stream of Spartans running at them chucking plasmas. They are no longer a map pickup so you cannot go get them. You just run mindlessly at the tank until its overwhelmed.
IMO you should only start with one grenade of the type you choose. Everyone should get the grenade pickup perk like previous halos. This would also make picking grenades as an ordnance more frequent.
Take the time to actually think how fast this game is compared to other halos and ask yourself. Do I want to a reward the other player for killing them? Most of the time whe I play objectives with a team I tell my team to drop shields and ignore. Only kill if they don’t take cover. Why? Because if they die we have to dodge another volley of 8 grenades. I don’t like playing that way but it wins.
I thought Halo 3 had the best vehicle combat, because it had awesome vehicles. I miss the chopper a lot and the elephant was a really interesting element to Sandtrap.
I think that the vehicle gameplay in Halo 4 is alright with some vehicles. Drivers just need to keep distance more and drive smarter. However, the wraith and mantis are usually killed because they get overwhelmed by the plasma pistol. The dmr should also be toned down against the heavier vehicles.
The Spartan Laser was powerful in Halo 3, but so were vehicles. Both Warthog variants were rolling death machines. Small arms fire wasn’t really effective on them, and the turret was pretty accurate over long ranges.
Look at a map like Standoff, for example. In a 4v4 setting, the game was over if the other team managed to gain the lead and both Warthogs. Yeah, you kind of “deserved” it for letting that happen, but it was pretty much impossible to counter.
well in halo 3, there was only 1 laser per map so it worked out incredibly well.
but yes spawning with a plasma pistol in a vehicle oriented map just defeats the purpose. mantises are useless b/c if u push up with it to get kills, you will be pp’d and taken out instantly.
NOT TO MENTION the plasma pistol’s overcharge has homage comparable to halo 2’s.
and stickies are a problem too. if you splatter anyone in a vehicle you automatically die b/c every1 has stickies, and I swear to god that plasma grenades have aim assist on them so its even worse than any other halo.

and that’s why standoff was a legit competitive map.
For the most part, I find this game my favorite for vehicle combat. Generally when I get hit by a plasma pistol I deserved it, and most of the time the other team is all running Bolt Shots so it’s never been an issue for me.
It’s the one scenario when I don’t hate the Bolt Shot.

That’s a very interesting point. I never even thought about people spawning with 3 stickies.
I am glad I am not the only one frustrated by vehicle combat. IMO it makes me want to avoid BTB all together which is highly disappointing as driving a warthog used to be one of my highlights of playing Halo.
Thanks for the replies guys; It would be nice if we could keep this going. I doubt 343 would even think of changing the create a class setup for BTB, but it’s worth a try to voice our opinions. Keep em, coming
