Does anyone think there should be a covenant version of the Mantis? Since practically every vehicle in the halo universe has a covenant or unsc alteration, wouldn’t it make sense that the Covenant would engineer their own mechs to use in combat after experiencing large-scale losses from the Mantis? I would figure such a machine would fit with other covenant vehicles, a faster, more shielded alien mech that would fire plasma shots which do less damage. Extra mobility in exchange for less firepower. I’d imagine 1 on 1 mech battles being very entertaining, and what about an entire game type where everyone has a mantis?
One word. Locust.
[deceptae] pulse of frugal ultimatums indicate [Covenant] reserves in possession of [Type-30 Light Excavation/Anti-Fortification Platform] as of [2534AD]… production of [HRUNTING/YGGDRASIL Mark IX Armor Defense System], had not commenced until post mortem of [Human-Covenant] inference.
I don’t want to see a Covy walker like the Locust simply to be a ‘Covenant version’ of the Mantis. It is that line of thinking that has bloated the Halo weapon and vehicle sandbox with functional clones.
The thought process for including a new weapon or vehicle should start with: wouldn’t it be interesting if we added a weapon/vehicle that did X, not: we should add a Covenant/UNSC/Forerunner version of Y weapon/vehicle.
For example I would like to see a new version of the Locust(As a sort of light tank with greater numbers) from Halo Wars that would replace the Wraith. Rather than simply adding another vehicle for the sake of parity within the factions, there are tangible changes to the sandbox and the kind of encounters that can be created. Everyone has their favorite weapons and vehicles, but sometimes removing or replacing brings more meaningful change than simple additions.
Take anything to do with the Mantis out of the game in general. Little kids like it and that’s it I’m pretty sure everyone else hates it

I lol’d.
Mantis is okayish. But I dont think that we “need” a counterpart for it. Some Covy vehicle would be good as long as it brings something fresh to the table. Perhaps Locust, as long as it is executed well.
Of course I don’t want them to add in vehicles just for the sake of having a counterpart to one faction. Every vehicle and weapon for that matter should be carefully analyzed and considered before being dropped in, thats probably why the only new vehicle in halo 4 was the mantis and others like the non-unique Revenant and the under-used Falcon were taken out. It does seem like at this point it would be hard to come up with something completely fresh, which is why I suggested a Covie mech in the first place.
Also keep in mind, the environments should be tailored to accommodate for vehicle play- there should be a good deal of space for them to move around in unlike certain maps like Vortex or Meltdown in Halo 4 where the other team comes out of nowhere and boards you and there’s nothing you can do to stop it. I like to bring up Sandtrap as a good example. That map was huge- you could easily maneuver around the edges with a scorpion and have great mobility, but the opposing team weren’t always screwed if they were smart enough to take cover in the temples and whatnot. That is the kind of level design which needs to be incorporated. None of that one million rock formations and hills getting in your way.
Sorry if I type too much

No there shouldn’t be a Covenant Mantis.
The vehicle sandbox has been able to avoid the problems plaguing the weapon sandbox of cloned and reskinned guns by not having direct counterparts. The Ghost is not directly equal to the Mongoose, or the Banshee to the Falcon, or the Wraith to the Scorpion.
So why walk into that pitfall?
What would a Covenant Mantis bring to the experience that the Mantis hasn’t?

This…I have been asking for this for years

Spider bot = wall crawling
If you want to play with a Covenant walker why not ask for a section where you take control of a Covenant Scarab?
