So here we are, in the aftermath of Reach. Like it or hate it, it’s clear that the community has differing opinions, some very strong. After 343 took control of Reach they title updated it, and thus changed Vanilla Reach’s core mechanics to please large portions of the community. This can’t and shouldnt happen with Halo 4.
When Halo 4 is released, it shouldn’t need a “Classic Playlist” or a game altering title update. If it does, Halo 4 MP will have essentially failed. I’m not one who’s against change,in fact I welcome it. If 343s changes to Halo need ammendments down the road, then they’ve got a serious problem on their hands. Vanilla Halo 4 needs to be the only Halo 4. These new features and changes need to be so well implemented that they belong in the game, and aren’t shrugged off for feeling unnecessary, or in worst case, completely removed after launch.
And obviously Title Updates for glitches, overpowered weapons/items and small game tweaks are always welcome. But it shouldn’t need to be on a Reach Title Update level, where the games core mechanics need reworking.
I’m extremely excited for Halo 4, and can’t wait to get my hands on this game. So please don’t take this as a hateful or negative post.
Halo reach didn’t “need” a classic playlist either…
just saying its not like Reach was an awful game like majority of the forum loves to say, Reach was only drastically changed because of whiners on the forum and yes a few things were broken mainly armor lock, but that’s about it. Reach could and did stand on it’s own, certain things were bound to change to appease the fan, this has happened in every Halo game since Halo 2, nothing is going to be perfect from the start, they are always going to try and improve based on fan feedback. That is something that 343 and Bungie are both pretty good about.
I do agree though in that I hope certain things like armor lock and other strongly dislikable things are not implemented into the game from the get-go.
I’m always annoyed by how many people who do not understand the term “Vanilla”…
If people want to play classic Halo in Halo 4, they should be able to play classic Halo in Halo 4. If you don’t want to play classic Halo in Halo 4, that’s fine.

Am I using it wrong? Doesn’t it just mean classic/default? Please correct me if I’m wrong.

But this is what leads to too many playlists/population fragmentation.

Well on these forums some people use “Vanilla” as an insult against non-TU gametypes. Vanilla is like, the bare bones, as basic as you can get, taking out as much of the game as you can. A “Vanilla Halo 4” will most likely be SWAT BRs (with no Sprint). Extra abilities, weapons, etc. are all “toppings” that you add for flavour and to mix it up.
If you look at other games, they refer to MVC3 and SF4 as “Vanilla” because they released new versions that added to the original game. Which is why the TU is more Vanilla then “Vanilla” since it’s taking out the bloom that was added to the game.
