So it has come to my attention that ma’am is used more often in halo then I give it credit. Am I losing it? Or was sir used for Female soldiers at all in the Halo material? (Bar FUD because that’s what started this post) because I swear I was cringing at the oversight somewhere in the series (Bar FUD) thanks if anyone could help!
In the marines, they are still allowed to say Sir to Female officers. It’s a gender neutral word to them

Not sure how it works. It may have just been a “we don’t want to re-record all these lines with ‘ma’am’ everyone is a sir”.
i imagine that in the five centuries since now, the English language or military (Or both) has likely adopted Sir or Ma’am as gender-neutral/ interchangeable words.
