Just thought of this as none of the pictures scream ‘me.’
My initial idea was to have screenshots, but as The Little Moa posted, some sick anime freaks would make perverted pictures. So scrap that.
Instead, what about a picture of your Halo 3/ Reach/ Soon-to-be-Halo4 Spartan. This was a cool feature on Bungie.net that I would love to be inherited here.

I’m not a fan of those lighting trick screenshots so I’d stay away TBH. I’d rather pick an avatar that shows an epic battle or something similar.

Although a good suggestion, people would just simply make offensive things in Screenshots and choose to use it as a forum avatar which is not a good idea.
