Marines (eight total) have four M16A4s, two M249 LMGs, one MK 19 grenade launcher, and one M39 EMR.
Terrain is abandoned downtown New York City and starting distance is seven hundred meters. Both sides know the general location of the other. Marines will have unlimited ammo but will have to reload. Any dead Marines respawn if they are killed provided that the remaining Marines beat the round and move onto the next.
Round one, fifty Elite Minors with Plasma Rifles.
Round two, twenty five Elite Majors with Plasma Rifles.
Round three, twenty Elite Ultras with Plasma Repeaters.
Round four, fifteen Zealots with Needlers and Energy Swords.
Round five, ten Elite Honor Guards with Carbines.
Round six, seven Spec Ops Elites armed with Energy Swords and Needle Rifles.
Can the Marines pass all six rounds or shall the Elites kill the filthy humans?
8 Marines (or for that matter anyone from the 21st century) go down immediately. Maybe they get a few elites, but energy shielding, superior strength, and numbers means that eight of anything (except Spartans or others using advanced 26th century tech, which doesnt exist in the 21st century) are toast.
(and just btw: Marines are about to start transitioning to the M4 from the M16A4 for frontline units bringing them to the same standard as Army and Air Force ground units)
Why are there so many Elites in each round? Ten Elites or less could probably win every round, and that’s only because the Elites are starting 700m away. To make it fair, the Marines should outnumber the Elites. Or maybe have a couple of Elites with a whole lot of Grunts.
The Marines set up fortification inside a near by building. That’s when the Elites bunch up, drop out of active camouflage and charge towards the marine fortification with spears. The marines make use of actual combat tactics while the Elites run and scream for honour. Flawless victory for the Marines.

Thats usually how the Covenant fought, the Elites were the officers, the Grunts were the cannon fodder.

We do have to take into consideration that bullet tech may have made a quantum leap since 2016, so who knows if the bullets themselves have changed (I highly doubt the bullet and firearm tech stayed stagnet).
Calibur aside military personnel are trained to fire semi-auto, so who knows if it will do as much to a shield as a close range full automatic burst. For that to be effective the Marines will have to be close enough to the elites, which may actually put them at a disadvantage.
Plus M16A4 is 3 round burst full auto, so who knows if it will do the same as a M7 or M20 in universe. Elites may close and swarm the marines will fully automatic fire before it becomes useful.

looks at Halo Reach, Halo 2A, Halo 5, and Halo Nightfall
Yes, yes they will be when they’re dropped by 8 rounds weaker than their modern counterparts (thanks Bungie!) or are dropped by a few pistol shots. Or the fact that they’re threaten by the pathetically weak SMG.

That’s the reason that gameplay isn’t always considered canon when it comes to weapon and shield power. Take a look at the books for more accurate representation of canonical power of the weapons. If I’m not mistaken in Contact harvest masses weapons fire from a large number of colonial militia wasn’t able to break a brutes shield (or was it power armor, one of the two)

I’m not using gameplay at all, I’m going by the cutscenes that Bungie (and in their case, were the highest canon) and 343i have made. To add the examples I names already, going by Halo 3: ODST’s cutscenes, a single Chieftain’s shields can be dropped by a single sniper rifle round and in Halo 3, a Brute Captain’s energy shields were broken by a single 8 gauge shot. From the novels, Elites go down to single bursts of BR fire and in Shadow of Intent, Elite Councilors were killed by Spikers, the same weapons that fire rounds weaker than 9mm pistols at least in KE.
And how in the world does a movie that 343i made count as gameplay?

Contact harvest is a book made by bungie, wasn’t mentioning fall of reach, although the movie is canon (if that’s what your thinking of?)
reguardless you must take into consideration that these firearms and bullets have had 500 years to advance. Somehow I don’t think your standard 20th century weapons would be the same or the UNSC would stick with 5.56 and M16 platform weapons.

So is the scene in First Strike when Elites die to single bursts of BR fire.
And I’m referring to the Nightfall movie (or whatever it is) that 343i made to introduce Locke.
The stats on UNSC weaponry so far only show that they’re inferior to modern firearms outside of a handful of examples.

Didn’t mention nightfall, but I don’t think that any shielded individual is killed in that either way. The only elite in it jumps of a railing while detonating a bomb. (Also edited my post a little further to mention technological advancements).

Correction: a single Chieftain’s shield feel in two shotgun blasts and a sniper round. And it was Halo: Broken Circle, not Shadow of Intent, where the Councilors And (former) Honour Guards were being slaughtered by naked Brutes with Spikers.

Locke dropped the Zealot’s shields in ten shots with his magnum before the Elite fell to his death.
Many of them have inferior range compared to their modern counterparts and in the case of the AR, are significantly lighter than their modern counterparts.

Can’t speak to the range on the AR, maybe effective range is meant to be at full auto? (although BR55 effective range is 900m, much longer than contemporary service rifles)
Also MA5 caliber is 7.62, an increase from the standard 5.56 today, so I would consider it heavier (reguardless of acctual weight)
And I will say that all of this doesn’t take into account potential increases in firearm technology or bullet technology which is bound to happen.

Thanks for the corrections.
And that scene is cringe worthy for me as I was an old school Halo fan before it got a Nerf bat to the balls starting at Halo 3. You know why? Because those Elites with the best equipment for their race are getting stomped by weapons three times weaker (going by the official stats) than a .22 caliber rifle’s round (which is where most of the Spiker’s damage is supposed to come from).
