I was thinking about what would cause a resurgence of the Flood in the Galaxy. The Covenant Remnant is led by someone that is not religiously fervent, and who understands that the only thing worse than a Human infestation is a Flood infestation.
The UNSC is actively decommissioning Halo installations, presumably making sure Flood sites are locked down. Aside from a containment failure scenario that, we are left with the Flood returning from outside the galaxy. Something that I think would be far too predictable. I think it would be very interesting if the Didact were to be the direct cause of their return. The Gravemind already twisted him into acting against the betterment of Mankind and the Forerunners, and the insanity that resulted from the interrogation in Silentium is clearly still a major factor.
Thoughts?
I blame ONI for the most part. This whole “never trust other species” crap is exactly what sparked the new Covenant faction to form in the first place. This is pretty much screwing over the galaxy when the Flood returns.

Can you blame them. Humans have never been quick to forgive. World war 2 started because of this. Imagine the nazis doing what they did for 25 years, do you think the rest of the world would forgive them easily? We are only 4 years after a looong war that almost wiped out humanity. The fact that some parts of humanity, Lord hood etc is willing to work with our previous enemy is better than we have ever done before.

That’s hardly an excuse and we paid dearly for it by killing Jul’s wife which caused the formation of a new Covenant. Sure we and the Sangheili wouldn’t be allies today and definitely not tomorrow, but surely down the line they would become a strong ally.
EDIT: A strong ally against the Flood.
I don’t know if I would say the Ur-Didact will be to blame for a return of the Flood. They are out there, waiting for humanity to become “ripe”.
They will strike again. The Ur-Didact will have little impact on that. The Precursors however are a different story.

And judging they pretty much know that the Flood’s returning, yeah, we need all the help we can get

Just to make it clear, I dont agree with ONI, but I can see where they are coming from. Im pretty sure the elites will be our ally in the future, especialy when the flood returns.

And maybe even Brutes if all goes well in the first issue of Escalation.

Yeah, and then the grunts, cause like sheep, they follow the flock. Probaly the hunters as well. They might be the smartest of the covenant species, and considereing it implied that they cant get infected they wpuld be a valuable resource. I think the elites and humans will form a new and better covenant to fight the flood. The prophets might even jump abord
Arrogance will be responsible for the Flood’s return. Whether it is the breakaway Covenant faction, the Ur Didact, the UNSC or it’s offshoots like ONI, or somebody else far in the future we have yet to know.
> Arrogance will be responsible for the Flood’s return. Whether it is the breakaway Covenant faction, the Ur Didact, the UNSC or it’s offshoots like ONI, or somebody else far in the future we have yet to know.
This i agree with 100% i really don’t like ONI being in command of the halo’s one wrong move and its all over. Especially since it seems rather way to easy to break containment.
I don’t really see the didact unleashing the flood intentionally. Even in his warped state, in the end he’s still trying to protect the forerunners and uphold the mantle. The reason prometheans exist is to fight the flood, so unleashing the flood would change him from being a bit warped to just being outright insane.
I don’t see the Ur-Didact unleashing the Flood as plausible. I’d even bet he fears the Flood worse than he fears Humans, and that’s saying something.
Let’s take a look at his mental state: a Gravemind drove him mad with the Flood torturously taking over the bodies of the Master Builder’s family. I bet he still fears that. Where-as with humans, despite killing every. Single. One of his children he even RESPECTED them and their tenacity.
I have an anxiety disorder, even some symptoms of PTSD though it’s unconfirmed. I fear death, yes, but it doesn’t give me an out-right anxiety attack. Now anticipation of things, does give me an attack eventually if I let it build mentally.
Put that in the Ur-Didact’s mind. He’s afraid of humans, what with the Mantle being handed down and all, but he is outright scared -Yoink- less of the Flood.
When he picked up the Master Chief, he didn’t immediately squish him, but if he picked up a Flood form, even if it had the Chief’s knowledge/conscience? He would have squished it right then and there.
If and when the flood return, it will coincide with a reveal of the still living Precursors. What their intentions will be is highly ambiguous. Call it a hunch if you will, but a reemergence of Flood will be tied directly with a return of the Precursors.

I would sure hope so considering the Flood are the Precursors.

We didn’t kill her, the Arbiter’s people did. And he was already trying to gather an army to wipe us out, Raia’s death merely strengthened his resolve.

Yes, but this war wouldn’t have escalated so quickly if ONI hadn’t interfered.
ONI did it. Always blame ONI, and you’ll always be right. We’ll probably have to team up with the Ur-Didact, Bigger Jaws style.

An oversimplification. Some Precursors became the powder which became the flood. There are still others out there, I believe the flood return will coincide with a return of Precursors in their true form.

Strengthened his resolve against the Arbiter and, for some reason, humanity, even though we had nothing to do with Raia’s death. All we did was start creating a poisonous crop to sabotage the Elites with. Since Jul already suspected we were doing something along those lines anyway, we really didn’t do anything to directly inspire him to wage war against us.
That was his plan from the very beginning. And then Trevelyan teleported him to an old Covenant colony world, where he got his army. We didn’t escalate anything, even if he never found out about the poisonous crop, he would still have had his army and he’d still be trying to wipe us out the same as he is now.
That doesn’t excuse ONI from being giant -Yoinks!-, but don’t give credit where none is due. ONI are just giant -Yoinks!-, they had no hand in turning Jul into a warlord. That was inevitable from day one.
