I am torn… I am fighting two different opinions on Halo 5.First off I am a Halo veteran, I remember playing Halo CE while I was stationed in Guam, as a rookie serviceman. I remember taking Halo with me to Iraq and Afghanistan to help moral and help pass the time. I remember sitting on the couch with my son playing Halo 3. As I have grown, Halo has grown.
I was so excited for Halo 5. I counted down the days. I even convinced myself that when I quit Destiny it was okay, because I had Halo to look forward too. I heard all the negativity. The lack of split screen, the lack of content, the possibility of Chief being a traitor. But, I had faith. Then it happens! Halo 5 is released! I called off work, I am ready for an epic battle. I start playing and… Its awesome! The opening scene is amazing the sound is great the graphics pretty good (even though not good enough to justify not having split screen) I play and play and start to realize that this isn’t anything like the ad campaign. I start to realize that I’m not playing as Chief very much. I start to realize I have all kinds of open questions. Where was blue team during all the other Halo’s? Why was Jul mdama so easy to infiltrate? Who are these Spartans sent to track down Chief? I go to google to research these burning questions. What I find is surprising, I find a lot of people saying you need to of read this book to understand this part, or you need to read this comic to understand that part. I find this to be surprising. I also will go as far to say that this is laziness on 343 part. To rely on other media outlets to tell a full blown story. Halo CE, Halo 2, Halo 3 and Reach all had stand alone stories. They invoked emotion, they invoked dread and fear. They left questions, but questions that would be answered in the next game. Not by a book or pod cast.So back to my original point.
I enjoyed the campaign I enjoyed the music and the different planets. But, Am I wrong to be upset that it requires other media outlets to understand Halo 5?
Thank you for your time.
Well i would be more upset with bungie. They ignored any form of external media and lore. forcing 343 to try to find ways to put it in game without smacking players in the face with it. Many of the concepts are easily explained online. At least its not like destiny were its says “I could tell you about this but I wont” as the campaign goes, it attempts to provide basic explanations through the dialogue of the characters during gameplay and cinematics. It definitly did better than halo 4 did in that aspect.
This game from the moment it was announced was falsy advertised, and the relevance of fire team Osiris is questionable. Not saying the story was bad cus it wasnt, but those are my two main issues plus lack of blue team
When playing CE for the first time, and Cortana says mentioned “Reach”, were you confused? What the hell is a “Reach”? Did you wonder “how long was I in this cryotube? Centuries? Days?” Did you know there was a book out called “Fall of Reach”? Did you question the motives of the Aliens fighting you? Very little is explained in the game.
It was just angry aliens fighting either a guy in green armor or a cyborg thing with a blue lady in his head and food monsters. That’s it. That’s all I knew. And I enjoyed the hell out it. But in reality, there was a CRAP LOAD of lore behind it at that point already. Was it necessary? No. Was I confused? Yup! Forerunners? Wat? Reach? Is that a place? Is Keyes smoking anything from that pipe? I mean, he got captured twice, so he must be smoking something …
Point is … well it is getting to be a bit much at this point, isn’t it? lol
Here, go look through this youtube channel, it’s all about Halo Lore and has special videos on Blue Team and what’s been going on leading up to Halo 5 that wasn’t in the games: https://www.youtube.com/user/HaloCanon
And remember, the book “The Fall of Reach” has been out longer than the game Combat Evolved, a lot of us have been dying to see Blue Team in the games. I guess even if it was just for three missions … -_-
I like how 343i is going with the extended lore, but I was hoping they would give players a rundown of all the characters in game and have build up for character development. Lack of blue team missions is sad and I could come up with some ideas where a blue team missions would be handy to help the plot some more. But you know the writer who made the last half of escalation that made halo 5 story isn’t the … best writer -_-
(the maps and gameplay does somewhat make up for it)

I agree. The play spaces are fantastic. Genesis may just be my new favorite Alien world in Halo … more so than Installation 04 or Requiem. Sangheilios is gorgeous too. And the gameplay is so fun, it makes up for it.
