Upgrades to Rangers

Sniper has what, 2, 3 upgrades? Now, I very rarely play Banished but when Rangers are easily outmatched in both upgrades and how dangerous the Sniper is in comparison, this reeks of unbalance.

I propose two upgrades for Rangers.

Upgrade 1: Energy Shields

This makes sense from both a gameplay and lore sense. Even the Stealth Elites from Reach (or was it CE? The memories run together at this point) had shields, even if they were super easy to destroy shields.

Upgrade 2: Beam/Focus/Needle Rifle

Depending on which of these they go with, they would be effective against different things.

Beam Rifle: Extra damage to infantry, on par with Stanchion Sniper System

Focus Rifle: Extra damage to vehicles+allows Rangers to target air (assuming they can’t already)

Needle Rifle: Extra damage to either crowds of infantry (this would help repel rushes, we all know UNSC marine rushes are annoying. I say that as a UNSC main) or vehicles.

I agree. I have no idea how the devs were ok with the way it is. I would love to hear them defend the current situation too.

Mix your rangers with shrouds and engineers. The shrouds will shoot down sniper shots, while the engineer shields will reduce incoming damage by 40 %. The shroud ability will also force them to come close to detect, AND the engineers will heal you.

As a banished main, I can say that right now the rangers are in a very healthy spot meta-wise. It’s easy to draw comparisons between them and snipers, but that’s not what the rangers are- they’re mid to long range skirmishers. As of now, they have very beefy health against other infantry and can be in the middle of a fight very well. As a whole, rangers are extraordinarily effective anti-infantry in this current version, with 5 squads being able to eliminate up to 20 or more marines. Rangers will also kill snipers, should they get in range, at this point. The snipers are extremely specialized, the rangers are more rounded.

As a result, adding upgrades to them would imbalance the game a bit. In the current version, they are definitely worthy of their tech two status, from the huge amount of times I have used them.

I would like to see a shield, as it would fit in with the mainline games, but… right now, I think it would make the rangers very, very broken. I sort of wish they would just have a shield from the start that gives them the same health as they already have for continuity’s sake, but it’s really not necessary.

Solid ideas

I feel at the very least they should detect stealth on their own. Snipers do (at least in Blitz, not sure in normal game)

Rangers detect.

Weird. Hasn’t worked for me, then again I also rarely play Banished. Must not have been close enough

Yeah, you have to be really close to do that. I think they could make that a bit farther away at least. You litterally have to be right next to the thing you need to see.

The problem is Snipers can detect from miles away thanks to their drone, Rangers have the usual detection range of maybe 4-5 meters.

Rangers are good units right now and if you lowered their health and gave them a shield to compensate, it would be a nerf that doesn’t make any sense.

Not really. That’s a pretty good buff, actually. They’d essentially have regeneration if you completely took their health in favor for a shield. I think they should give them a small shield capable of protecting from a second or two of marine fire on top of their current health.

I agree. The Rangers really need upgrades.

I would just like the rangers to have a Shield. I like that they can shoot air something the snipers can’t do for some reason.

Yeah , whatever happened to upgrades? In halo wars there was 2-3 upgrades for every until (not counting uber units) and in HW2 there’s like 1 upgrade for some units were some don’t even have 1 upgrade? But yeah I agree on the shields and weapon upgrade.

jackals are fine already a stupidly good unit beats all infantry and is already better than snipers in its current state

True as yoink. Thumbs up.

I’m confused do I have to have a fully upgraded sniper to attack other units or are they only able to target infantry? My fully upgraded snipers only target infantry and they can’t attack bases either or garrisoned units.

Fully upgraded and they still only target infantry.

Strange considering what snipers could do to tanks in Halo 4 and Reach

I think that right now it is universally agred that the first upgrade must be a shield and the second one a weapon upgrade. That being said, I hadn’t heard about the needle rifle, that is very interesting. It wouldn’t turn the Ranger into a Sniper copy, but rather give it a unique twist with some AoE when putting the killing shot in an infantry unit.
