I went in halo 5 and an update popped up of about 200 MBs. I updated it and started watching tv. When I came back it was only on 5%. It turns out it is “updating” 87.5GB. I’m not sure how it messed up. Did it do this for anyone else.
No.It was a 5 min download for me.
Mine is also updating incredibly slowly. It’s only up to 35% after five hours but I haven’t noticed whether it’s actually downloading the entire game again though that would explain it! 
I’ve tried power cycling the Xbox, router and cable modem, made no difference and ended up having to play something else instead.

Is your Xbox set to quick start ? If it is, the update will have downloaded when available to you.
Mine is only up to 44% after leaving it another 8 hours overnight so I’m convinced now that this is updating the entire game! Looking at the bandwidth usage page in the network settings I can see that it downloaded around 25GB between 11pm and 2am (I initially started the update at 8pm) until I guess it had a connection issue as was not connected to live this morning. Since the time I started writing this another 2.5GB has been downloaded and I’m at 46%.
For the record, when I started the game last night and it prompted that an update was required is did say it was 190MB and I’ve been on every night recently so the game was otherwise up to date.
Dude, I started the update yesterday. I played TMCC Matchmaking, then checked H5. It said 2%. I clicked it, and I could play. I don’t know how, but its been happening a lot recently.
Same thing has happened to me. My Xbox began auto updating at 2AM this morning and it’s just now at 85%. My router reports over 84GB have been downloaded since then as does the bandwidth meter on the Xbox. It’s downloading the entire game again. Well, there goes my 250GB cap. Thanks 343!
