How long is this going to go on? I know they are working on it but how long is too long for a new game to work?
Depends on which company you ask. EA/DICE seems to think several months after a game launches to even remotely start working is perfectly okay (Battlefield 4).
The real question at this point, is whether or not this first patch to “fix” everything will actually do that. Or, perhaps more likely, if this patch will actually break even more after it releases.

So probably gonna be continuous fixes until halo 5

Most games have continuous fixes over their life span as new content gets added and breaks old stuff, or just due to the statistic that for every 2 bugs fixed, another is created?

Yea but right now we have a barely playable game
The delay is probably the best decision they can make at the moment unfortunately.
They may as well just take their time and make sure the updates they release actually fix what needs fixin and doesn’t break anything else in the process.
You can’t defuse a bomb after it’s gone off.
It’s clear that there is a laundry list of things wrong with this game across single player and multilayer and issues that effect parties and party chat. There’s no point for them to rush out with a patch that only fixes a couple of issues.
Fixing small issues and continuous improvements are a positive thing and I’ve seen that in many games. That’s not what’s happening here though, this game is simply broken across the board, from what I’ve seen we’re looking at a Battlefield 4 level debacle. It’s going to take them all a while to get all the issues under control.
A friend and I decided it was no big deal and started playing the single player campaign only to find out that you can’t actually save progress within a mission when you’re in co-op?!?! Wow! We played through 3/4 of the way through Keyes (second last halo ce mission) before we were randomly disconnected. The random disconnect killed our party chat as well. I couldn’t get it back until I shut down the party, shut down the game, restarted the party, restarted the game. Of course all progress in the mission was gone. It was pretty frustrating.
Not cool 343i, not cool.
They say it has to go through the Microsoft Certification process to ensure quality. What happened to being certified for quality before the game came out? And if the same process let the game release broken, consumer confidence that the patch fixes many of the problems probably isn’t very high. I’m trying to be optimistic that we’ll be playing some smooth matchmaking within a week.
only update i am aware of is Wednesday. Wednesday they will be rolling out a downloadable patch

Unfortunately, the Content Update that was supposed to release on Wednesday has been delayed until “later this week.”

That’s the update they’re pushing to later in the week. There’s no set date but it’s mentioned here underneath the 11.17 update.

They switched this to later

I do think it’s going to be quite a while before we get what we paid for. I certainly don’t have much confidence that the patch that’s coming “later this week” will fix much, if anything.
The reason I say this is because of the now infamous 1th place text in multiplayer. If they had even played one single match before releasing this game, they would have surely seen this. Therefore, this very prominent, albeit harmless, bug made it through the entire process of 343 playing their own game, microsoft play testers playing it and e3/PAX/RTX demo’s without one single person ever noticing it. There’s no way that nobody noticed it and the fact that something that would have taken 2 minutes to fix (it’s literally a matter of finding where the code is that contains the text for it to display for end of match leaderboards and changing 1th to 1st) does not bode well with them getting this game to a fully functioning state any time soon.
