343i announced that they will be putting in a CSR 1-50 trueskill system, due to lots of community discussion on the matter.
But does anyone else share my opinion, that its simply going to be ineffective, as it will only be displayed on Halo Waypoint and not in-game
Back in H2/3 the numerical skill level beside your tag during matchmaking, made you feel proud of the level you achieved. It was also publicly displayed to everyone you play against. I’m pretty sure barely anyone will be searching my gamertag up on waypoint to see my CSR number.
H4 has mimicked COD’s “more you play, the higher rank you are” system, where rank increases by gaining more exp. At the very least, a simple K/D ratio displayed in game would have been a good indicator of someones skill level.

Yeah, well that’s what happens when a series switches from the FPS genre (Halo 1-3) into an RPG (Reach-4). :3
I am willing to bet MS is pushing them to hide it on console and require you to hold Waypoint or Smart Glass in your hand on your phone to push using handheld for xbox.
If the Ranking system does its job, you need not worry about seeing other people’s ranks. You should be closely matched, making for a more competitive game.
And I would submit that it is the “publicly visible” rank that accounts for much (but not all) of the -Yoink–hattery that people hate so much in the “competitive” scene. You want that number, and you’re getting it. If others can’t see it, you cannot easily use it as a point of superiority; but it still serves as an incentive.

While you do bring up some good points, I still think having the CSR visible somewhere in game (like the war games service record.) would be a lot more convenient than putting it on a website.

I agree. It seems a bit convoluted; but as someone said, it looks like a way for MS to promote their tablet.
If it’s not in game then it will be useless. Anyone can say they are a 50. By the time the other player actually looks said player up on waypoint, that player will be gone.

True, but if that player doesn’t do well, it’s a pretty sure guess he was lying. Even if he was a 50 and did poorly, he clearly got outclassed by better players, so that big number obviously meant he either boosted or bought it. Either way, the rank number, relative to the other players, was worthless as a tool for comparison. Might as well not even look at it.
It it makes the matches fair then I don’t care. The point of a Skill system from what I have gathered is to match players up fairly. 343 haven’t dismissed the idea for putting it int the game but it won’t be visible in Halo 4 on launch.
It should be pointed out that matchmaking already implements trueskill matchmaking in the background. All the CSR thing does is allow players to see where they stand on Waypoint.
And honestly, ranking people based on skill is a bad idea, in my opinion. Skill ratings are just a number. Encouraging people to treat it like an RPG-style rank does nothing good.
I don’t like the EXP Progression system. It has no incentive to keep playing or stopping someone from quitting. “What’s the point of staying in game? I only lose a mere 500 Exp if I quit.” That mentality is awful, you almost never saw someone quit in Halo 3 (people do now but that’s because it’s dead).

And as predicted it doesn’t work. I’m usually put against good players (a good thing) but my team mates usually suck, so once again, the invisible system doesn’t work.

If the system “doesn’t work”, it’s not because it’s invisible. The visibility of a skill rating system has not affect on it’s ability to work. If it seems like the game is lacking quality matches, either the system isn’t strict enough, or something else is to blame.
If it is waypoint-only then I really think it will be just as worthless as BPR. Around the time CSR was announced I believe Frankie said on NeoGAF that it could possibly be shown in-game, though.
I’d really like to see it in-game in a few ‘ranked’ playlists, sort of H3 styled. I find the issues associated with not having the ranked/social divide are incredibly prominent in H4 and can make matchmaking a rather poor experience, so having a few playlists featuring visible in-game CSR may help that situation.
