UNSC weapon availability lacking in recent Halos

This has been a downward trend that has made me unhappy. In the previous Halos you could complete almost any campaign mission with your starting UNSC weapons and more importantly, find enough ammo throughout the level to continue to do so. This was made possibly by deceased allies, Pelican weapon drops, and especially the Flood.

With the exceptions of some levels on Halo 2 where none were available (and for good reasons) what I’ve noted with some disappointment in Halo 4 was you just cannot complete a campaign level with your starting guns. In Halo 5 it’s even worse where you can start off with a battle rifle and magnum, and you’ll never get ammo for them until it’s either far too late, or there’s simply no UNSC guns elsewhere for that level. What I liked about Bungie’s levels was there was always resupply areas spread throughout (bodies to loot, Pelican weapon pod drops, or weapon racks), and Halo 4’s and 5’s levels are lacking this sorely.

I don’t mind using power weapons I come across of course. I don’t mind using enemy weapons. But what irks me is forced reliance to do so because there’s just no way you’re going to come across another Battle Rifle or Magnum (of course you can get magnum ammo from squad mates dropping theirs to pick up power weapons but that hardly counts) for the rest of a campaign level because every enemy you encounter will be Promethean or Convenant and they’re not packing UNSC guns (at least all the time).

Halo 6 should address this issue in their campaign. Let Prometheans use UNSC weapons more, or hopefully there will be a greater Marine presence (loved working with Infinity assets in 4). Heck, just make sure there’s enough human weapons spread out in EVERY campaign level. Bungie did this masterfully in their games and 343 has yet to emulate the same mechanic.

I don’t think thats an important issue. It doesn’t really make a lot of sense for large numbers of UNSC weapons to be on Requiem in H4 or Sanghelios in H5.

Requiem did have them in certain areas, scattered debris weapon drops from the other half of Forward Unto Dawn. With Infinity showing up they were better supplied but still should’ve had some Pelican weapon drops go around at least. As for Sanghelios, we were delivered Mantises, so some weapon resupply drops could’ve been done as well.

What about meridian?

This is a good point. But really it isn’t that much of an issue.

The lack of ammo has been a big sticking point with me for both H4 and H5. Its not just the lack of UNSC weapons, all weapons have a low ammo capacity, at least lower than they should in campaign.

You barely have enough ammo to finish more than one or two encounters with any particular weapon. Its especially noticeable with battery based weapon like the Storm Rifle where I find myself going through them at a frankly silly rate. Many people complained about the “bullet sponge” nature of the Prometheans in Halo 4, but that was never my problem with them, my biggest issue is that they don’t give you enough ammo to deal with them.

Yet somehow the ammo issues managed to get even worse going into Halo 5. It might sound like a small problem to some, but it really is limiting when you have to base your decision to pick up weapons based on what has ammo rather than what you want to use.

Have you been playing on the famine skull?

Yea, decision making sucks.
