How is that possible? I know there will be an explanation, but how can a massive organization get “defeated”? Not all of the UNSC can be at Zeta Halo.

Do we know how much of the UNSC was committed to Zeta Halo? Right now humanity is in a terrible state with the majority of its assets compromised and seized by the Created. We do hear of the scientific and military groups sent to Zeta Halo for the purposes of research and decommission some years back prior to Infinite. Who’s to say a lot of the UNSC forces that were defeated weren’t comprised of the aforementioned assets that have been there for years?
I have little doubt that the Chief was deployed with a contingent of available forces from the Infinity but to claim that all of what’s left of the UNSC was decisively beaten in this one conflict I find unlikely, personally. It wouldn’t be practical to commit the bulk of what remains to this one fight unless it was something of the utmost important.
Well to be fair most of the unsc fleet is disabled by cortana and the rest of the rouge ai. Also we really don’t know just what kinds of things the banished have access to. If the banished have massive fleets of covenant ships under their command now and the unsc doesn’t have many ships or military equipment that work then I can definitely see the banished winning. But we still don’t know the banished military as well as we’d like.
I’m pretty sure at the end of 5 the U.N.S.C. infinity managed to leave earth right before the guardian started to wipe out it’s defences and fleets, not to mention that a major amount of ship a.i. most likely defected to the created making those ships space tombs, also world’s under the supervision of the defected a.i. would most likely force it’s populace to submit to the created so it’s not to unlikely a bulk of the U.N.S.C. was brought down quickly due to the reliance of a.i. management alongside the banished being a capable faction that held off the covenant
There’s the guardians and rogue AI as everyone else mentioned.
The other is, despite the fans complaining about it for years…infinity can’t do everything and be everywhere. Humanity had its resources funneled into a few good projects but honestly it’d take time for them to be a real galactic contender after the beating the covenant gave them, even with their new toys.
With the Banished and the Rogue AI with Guardians I would assume it would be pretty difficult. I do think there are survivors but the UNSC is not what it used to be.

It is assumed that in Halo 5 Cortana activated the Guardians, weapons that are like massive EMPs, when the exiles arrived when the UNSC still had their weapons and ships disabled and therefore they may be partially losing
