i think the game play itself is great, and i am really enjoying it. the story of the spartan 4’s kinda bugs me though. mostly the commander.
she makes condescending remarks, belittles, and even insults them. not the behavior of a professional special operator.
“once again spartans do in 24 minutes what marines can’t do in 24 hrs”
—yeah that’s because they aren’t genetically enhanced and wearing super fancy armor like spartans.
“if i’m reading this map right, there should be a…”
—wait, you’re in charge of spartans and there’s some doubt about your ability to read a map ?
“man up (marine)”
—once again, easy for a spartan to say.
unprofessional.
carter from reach = professional
s117 = professional
and btw the gender doesn’t bother me at all, but at least make her a good leader. just the observations of a former paratrooper who worked around operators on occasion.
p.s. that miller character seems kind of like a lack-wit. developing characters is cool and all, but come on.
It’s to be expected. The Spartan IVs were regular humans with developed personalities that were allowed to flourish. The IIs and IIIS were mainly indoctrinated children who repressed emotions and while they did have personalities, they keep to themselves. It’s why they appear more robotic than actual humans. We’d be seeing that if Palmer was a II or III.
If you want to be a nit-picker, the valid criticism of the lower quality of writing and dialogue for Spartan Ops could also be an explanation. Seeing how she was a former Marine herself, i did find it odd that she would have such an elitist view about how long it took them to complete an OP (or failure to do so in 24 hours). She could be teasing as that seems to be a common trait that she has but still, i can see why someone would question that piece of dialogue.
However flawed, she at least has a personality. She seems to have chip on her shoulder, more like a common soldier than a leader IMO. Then again, if goofballs like Demarco or Madsen can be Spartans, then i guess Palmer can be the leader of whole fire teams consisting of them. After all, she may be rough around the edges and witty but perhaps her personality betrays her skill and ablity. It has to be the case because you don’t take common soldier and let her lead groups of genetically modified Elite soldiers.
Great point above, don’t expect S-IV’s to be like Chief or Carter, II’s and III’s are completely different. They are more robotic both physically and mentally and have had a different upbringing
I agree completely, and I am glad I am not the only one who found her remakes as condescending and out right rude. I didn’t like her from the first time she was introduced in campaign, and it is not because she is a chick in charge. I just would expect more from the leader of the most elite squad in the military. I think we are stuck with her though. Look at how awesome Sgt. Johnson was, why can’t we have some one as badass as him?
Don’t be such a whiner. These Spartans are not the same as the original wave. First of all, these Spartans weren’t created to be the government’s secret tools, they weren’t experiments, they are highly touted and highly decorated. They are also far more informal. I prefer the stoicism of Chief and the previous Spartans, but in terms of logic, how these Spartans are makes complete sense.
If we’re talking about her in particular, I think she’s a waste of space. Cal from Legends would rip her to SHREDS, and I would laugh.

you ninja’ed me. i was going to say the II’s and III’s didnt really have childhoods, they had very tough upbringings i can agree. but they had nothing close to a childhood.
If you think Palmer is “unprofessional,” you should try a day in the actual military. Oh the things we used to say about Marines! Palmer is oh-so tame compared to the real deal.
Me and a friend were just discussing this earlier. You can really tell the Spartan IVs are not proper Spartans.Although it’s not like the UNSC has enough time to raise proper Spartans.
I hate when she complains about all the Marines dying in Ch.3 Ep.2. YOU were the one who ordered them to follow me, lady. They made it abundantly clear they couldn’t defend themselves. Their deaths are YOUR fault, not mine.
It also bothers me, but only in the sense that, I am pining more and more to see the Spartan II’s come in and kick some alien rear. I want to see the huge personality difference as well that they are playing into.
Just a theory, but perhaps 343 is trying to emphasize the IV’s personality as being too much of a personality, and that palmer and the other spartan IV’s in cutscenes etc, will be contrasted against the spartan II’s in Halo 5 (or maybe the later SOPS episodes!?!) This is also supported by Forward Unto Dawn, Kelly and Fred in the Pelican being VERY stern and VERY robotic, although they are in fact the same age as the Kids from Corbulo. 343… grace us with knowledge I beseech the! I want to know if the old crew get back together in 5!

More of the IIIs than the IIs in most cases. Many, if not all kids conscripted into the SPARTAN-III program were war orphans. The Covenant glassed many planets, serrated a lot of children from their families (it’s safe to assume many parents died too). To get the children to comply, Kurt and Mendez played on their need for revenge to convince them to join the program and face the very aliens that took away what they cherished the most; a loving family/friends.
The IIs had families and were taken from them by ONI. Perhaps not all of them lead happy lives with their parents but what happened was that many Spartan IIS simply forgot about their past lives (and last names) and families due to the mental/physical training, dangerous missions, and augmentations. Because they were indoctrinated at an early age (Halsey mentions this in the Halo 4 prologue), it was instilled in them that it was a matter of duty to endure the trials and hardships they had to go through. I doubt any of them are angry what was done to them.
While the military training they endured was indeed a harsh upbringing, i think the Spartan IIIs endured a harder rise to adulthood because of The Covenant.

10 years in the army. i was just a regular paratrooper and yes we acted the fool. i worked with operators on a couple occasions and they were very professional.

You could say that it’s actually the opposite… that the UNSC did not have opportunity to properly raise SPARTAN II’s (and to a lesser extent III’s).
Remember that SPARTAN II’s were all taken at a very young age, and in small number. They only ever interacted with each other, and the limited number of outsiders attached to the program. By the time they were out in the greater universe and interacting with outside personnel, there were only a handful of them, and they operated mostly together.
Being raised in what is, ultimately, total social isolation has rendered them unequipped to deal with other people and to interact socially in a normal manner. SPARTAN II’s wouldn’t know what a normal interpersonal interaction is. They’ve only ever known the strict and rigorous military life they’ve been brought up in.
SPARTAN IV’s are “normal” people interacting with other “normal” people. The banter you hear is exactly what I would expect to hear in the military, as I did every day for 10 years’ service with one of the premier units of its type in the entire US military.
