UNPOPULAR OPINION: I like the new Rocket Launcher.

I want to immediately hope someone doesn’t strike down this thread as trolling or whatever, but I want to say it; I’m quite content with the design change of the Rocket Launcher for Guardians.

Now, I know why people aren’t happy with it. I mean, the classic Halo rocket launcher is pretty iconic in it’s design, and it has a lot of fond memories associated with it. Truth be told, I am glad that it’s coming back in the capacity of a legendary weapon (whatever that means), but I want to explain why I like the new design.

Now, from a first-look perspective, it does look a bit like a cheap redesign. Without using it, it does just look like your typical SMAW coming out of the US Army from a side view perspective. But really, getting to use it and seeing how it handles, it’s what made the difference for me.

So, gameplay wise, I’m absolutely not bothered with the change. It still handles like the good ol’ rocket launcher, didn’t feel like using a different weapon. So my issue isn’t even remotely here. But most of my liking for this design comes from a realism standpoint.

First, the old design, as cool as it did, strikes me with a few hypothetical guesses about the dangers of operating it. The rotating barrels alone lead me to speculate about two serious safety risks it could pose. The first being soldiers operating it possibly getting their hands caught in the rotating barrels as they moved, potentially causing severe harm to the operator. The second issue being jamming and misfiring. With the reliance on switching the barrel like that to fire again, a barrel jam could lead to a catastrophic backfire. And with the ordnance it fires, a catastrophic backfire could very seriously be lethal to the operator. And the final nitpick, aside from all that, is ammo efficiency. You reload this thing by pulling the rear tubes and replacing them, much like (ironically, considering my past mention) reloading a SMAW. And the replacement tubes are huge too, given the ammo pickups we saw in CE and H2 nearly being 2-3 feet tall.

As for this new design, it does come off as a bit generic in some places. But the few things I want to highlight is as follows:

  1. The magazine-based reloading, while already making me think of the Borderlands rocket launchers for how that works, is already infinitely more logical than the classic design. Twin rocket packs contained in a magazine at under half the size would not only be efficient for faster reloading, but also for easier carrying.

  2. The single-barrel design, although it doesn’t look as cool, would logically mean far less chance for jamming or misfires compared to the rotating twin barrel design of the old rocket launcher.

  3. The scope. I can’t express how much I liked the scope. Even with SmartScope opening the possibility for a holographic interface for the classic rocket launcher, I like this new design, and I’ve always liked hard scopes on rocket launchers. The interface looked clean and serviceable, so in my mind, it does win some style points.

Now, I want to express this strongly: I don’t condemn the old rocket launcher design in favor of the new one. I’ll still love the old one too, as I even said I’m glad it’s getting special treatment and coming back in some capacity. But I want to establish from a logical/functional perspective as to why I think this design works, even if some of the examples I gave aren’t things we haven’t experienced in the game. If you love the old design and don’t like the new one, that’s cool, I just wanted to give my feedback on something that’s been getting a lot of negative attention.

I also liked the new look of the rocket launcher.

I remember bringing this up on a youtube post when video of it was 1st Airing. And I like it.

And your wrong about the Tubes. You replace the WHOLE tube. Not the rear. Basically your swapping the Tubes with the trigger mechanism.

Looking at this. The rocket doesn’t seem practical for light combat units. Yes it works great for spartans. You have to remember, not one Marine actually carried rockets on them on Halo CE, even though you found them and their ammo with Marine bodies.

I wouldn’t even see light units even carrying spares for the rockets. They would most likely fire their rounds and dump the whole system to prevent from being weighed down. Mechanized and Armored units I could see using the old rockets to full effect. Or the spartans for you can totally tell Bungie designed them for MC to really use.

The newer rocket system looks far more realistic. Easy to use and reload. Smaller and lighter. Far more easier to mass produce. You can see light infantry using them to better effect.

The Main reason I say light infantry a lot for a lot of combat you see the Marines in is Light Infantry. Be it Motorized units in Warthogs or Air Assault in Pelicans.

I don’t think anyone really thinks its bad looking, just an AT4 with a mag, but it’s not anything special. Not many games have an iconic rocket launcher, but Halo did, and now its a simple bazooka. However with the req system its possible maybe through cosmetic change that one could select the classic launcher, seeing as they perform the same.

I like it too even though it looks generic, however I like the old rocket even more.

The new ones fine, though I do prefer the SPNKr.

Original rocket should still be returning as a Legendary weapon

I like both. They both look like they’re fun to use.

Dude, I’ve never seen anyone be so logical about a weapon in a videogame…

I like the old design more… but its so good to see something different. Honestly, after so many years of Halo im tired of looking at the same old designs over and over.

I’m on board with the new design. I have no problem with it, and I don’t hold any of the weapons in an “iconic” status. I’m the guy on Waypoint that’s always whining about the overuse of the word iconic.

Edit: There’s that iconic word again… two posts below this one and eight posts below this one. That makes four times it’s been used lol.

Yet another pointless change to make the game more generic.

Just because of how awesome and iconic it is, I would prefer the old SPNKr, but I’m not against the new one anymore. The top-load bracket clip and the pop-out optics are cool enough to give it a pass. I would like but one thing: I want it in black.

I do wonder if from the beginning 343 had planned for the SPNKr to be a legendary weapon. How they could make such a change to the rocket launcher and not expect fearsome backlash from the community, I do not know.

As long as it does what the rocket launcher is meant to do then for the most part I’m fine with it.

For me it looked ugly at first but I got use to it in the beta, I still prefer the older model over this new one. But definitely nothing to cry or lose sleep over.

Looks pretty generic and ugly IMO.

I like it also. I actually prefer a lot of 343i’s human weapon designs over Bungie’s, save for the sniper rifle from Reach.

I was a little upset about it at first (just as I am with the changes to the Carbine and other stuff), but it has grown on me. Plus, with the addition of the SPNKr as a Legendary weapon, I can’t really complain.

I liked the old rocket launcher, not a fan of the new design. The old one is just to iconic. The new one is to bad of a design but just not for halo if you ask me.

From a lore perspective, it seems like a better design I think…
