Hello, they call me Giff and recently I’m in disbelief by how bad I’ve been playing. I’m still enjoying the game, though I always noticed I’ve died in ridiculous ways i.e a lucky stick, or the enemy conveniently always having a teammate by their side (whereas I never have one, even though I try to stick by my team much of the time; a factor of my unluckiness). I’ve been playing Halo for a while and I consider myself a decent player, my strongest game being Halo 3; I’m not really bad at the others. I tend to carry a lot of deaths because I’m a favorite target for some reason, but I try to make up for it in the amount of kills I get. I think another factor of my unluckiness is the fact that I don’t get decent teammates very often and I’m pitted against the hardest people; one experience was a 50-7 loss. I do have the occasional good game, and even if my team loses, I can keep a positive K/D and stay on the top of my team, but right now my skill is starting to slump. Any suggestions on how to improve?
The best way to stay alive is to not stick your neck out too far. Make sure you have cover you can retreat into if things go awry, and don’t be afraid to retreat if the enemy is making an aggressive advance on your position. A good way to boost your accuracy is to aim for the chest instead of the head until their shields are down, then aim for the head.
Another seldom mentioned tactic but one of my favorites: If you crouch while you move, you won’t appear on other players’ radars. You can use this to your advantage and sneak up on opponents if you know where they are. And if you’re in a position where you can see an enemy and they don’t know you’re there, you can toss a grenade at their feet and follow up with a headshot for a decisive kill.
Hey Giff,
When you’re on-tilt, I find it best to switch playstyles, from your description it seems like you play with an aggressive mindset, chasing people down on your radar.
Try the opposite, let them come to you, stick to the edge of the map where you know people can’t come up behind you, choose a spot with a couple of corners or where the enemy will have to become exposed to engage on you. “Blue room” on Guardian is a good example of this where you can shoot from the doorways and quickly retreat back into the room where they’ll have to come around an obvious corner or perform an obvious jump to engage you if they really get sick of you peppering them.
When you see them coming in, bombard them with a grenade and stick to your cover, ready to retreat. With this playstyle another important factor is providing cover fire for your teammates and creating “safe” areas of the map, just one shot from across the map into a fight can sway the fight in favour of your ally winning.
Also, if you retreat from a fight, firing as you go, rather than rushing in, you can often pull an enemy out of position and into the jaws of your waiting allies. It’s also REALLY easy to hit great grenades when they’re rushing you as opposed to you rushing them, and in a pinch you can always jump as soon as you get out of sight around the doorway, when they come around expecting you at head height and you’re actually above/behind them it’s pretty easy to turn a fight around!
Give it a go!
Okay, I recently played a game where I’m just completely certain I have some of the -Yoink!- luck ever, I went 11-15 (top of my team) in a match in Halo 2 on Lockout, and I swear to god that no matter where I hid or how well I followed these strategies, I would just get -Yoinked!- over and over, I was sniped at close range when I had a sword, grenades kept getting a lucky bounce and exploding right in my face, there was a guy around every corner ready to kill me, even when I spawed I would just get sniped one second after I started walking. I just find it so unbelievable that people are able to pull off what they just did to me this match.

Damn dude, that reminds me of when I started played Reach. Back when one, single, meager victory was way too much to ask for.
When things start getting shoddy for me, I usually stick to shadowing teammates (not kill-stealing) and watch their back. If I’m feeling excessively scrubby I might camp with a shotgun or something.
Another thing I do is switch playlists. If I’m being a Bad Kid in Team Slayer, I’ll hop in Big Team.
