Unlocks and Awards

I’m not sure if this has been mentioned before in another thread or not so I’m just gonna say what I gotta say. We all know there were a lot of things wrong or that we didn’t like in Halo 4. These included poor placing in matches, ranking up to easily, and so on. But, the one thing that completely ruined the game for me was the unlocks. In Halo 4 when you reach a certain level you automatically are awarded with a award such as armour, emblem, or weapon. This was one of the worst things I think they did. Although I didn’t think it at the time Halo Reach had their system perfectly. Each game you would get credits and these would increase your rank as well as serve as a type of currency you could save up to buy things you wanted. It was unique and took much more effort to get things like awards or unlocks. Another example, in Halo 3 for armour such as Hyabusa you had to do specific challenges. This is what the next Halo needs, not some cheap lazy rank up and you can have everything system.

Does anyone else want credits or a similar system like this back?

I prefer Reach’s system.

I don’t like Halo 3’s using achievements for unlocks or Halo 4’s commendation/rank based unlocks very much.

Yes. H4’s unlock system for customization was lazy. Most of the stuff is unlocked simply by leveling and for the stuff that isn’t, you have to complete the end level of all the challenges.

That said, I don’t necessarily think that Reach’s or H3’s system was that better though. With Reach you had to buy everything and with H3 everything was tied to achievements.

Instead a mix of all three I think should be implemented. Some unlocks awarded for level up, some require purchase, some require challenges to unlock (themed to the challenge too, example being requiring Assassinations to unlock Venator with each level unlocking one peice) and some requiring achievements.

The rewards system in Halo 4 didn’t really bother me all that much. Sure, some could argue, but there were a lot of other (and in my opinion, cooler,) things out there that required certain levels of mastery, such as certain weapon mastery, game type mastery, certain skill tactics, Legendary campaign completion, and others. Also, the Spartan Points system had weapons and AA’s that required a points system to unlock.

I’d be fine to Reach’s system return, and understand that H4’s system may seem lazy, in a way. But really, I’m fine with either or.

I didn’t think of combining them. That’s a really good idea and I think that might just work.

Well, with Halo 3 and 4 you can at least try to work towards what you want. In Reach all you can do is grind.

I think a healthy mixture of all 3 is in order. Personally I think a healthy choice of base armor configuration should be unlocked by default (So, default, MK V, ODST, Scout etc.) with other armor sets being unlocked as you progress on the progression system. With each individual set there could be a challenege to complete related to the set itself, and as you got farther into the challenge you would unlock more attachments or variants of the armor set.

Some sets would be locked behind achievements, and you would have to complete those achievements to unlock their set. These achievements could vary in difficulty, from something as simple as “Get an airssassination” or “Get an overkill extermination” (perhaps a variant called exterminator armor? Just a thought) to as difficult as “Complete the campaign SLASO” the idea being a hefty challenge with a nice reward.

This way you have a reward for doing something awesome, for grinding and for completing challenges as opposed to just one of the three.
