Universe Canon Policy

Does anyone know if there are any direct statements by 343 stating that Everything is canon unless directly trumped by material in game? I know that promotional material and commercials are not canon. But I’ve always operated under the assumption that everything in the books should be taken as word of God, until otherwise proven incorrect. Especially since the last round of edited editions are all under 343’s helm.

Not all promotional material is incorrect. Do you remember the Halo: 3 Landfall trailer? That was the Battle of Sector 6, which was taking place just outside of a city in Afghanistan. It’s canon…

And the Deliver Hope Trailer from Reach was canon as well.

Reasonable. Its just game trailers often evolve over time. Like the Portal being surrounded by Assault carriers and the absence of the Arbiter.

I’m just wondering if there are any codified statements where someone has said. Feats in books, unless directly trumped by the games, are canon.

I know the hierarchy is

Games
New Books/comics
Bungie Books/comics
Promotional

All under the same. That’s how it should be. All canon. There might be some artistic takes and non canon stuff here and there but generally all canon. Things in halo now complement each other well.

Books are on the top of the pecking order, I’ll say that much.

Is there any proof of this, and if not, who should I direct that question to? I just spent a few hours debating with someone who argued that UNSC space battles don’t count since we never see the same feats in the cutscenes.Drove me nuts.

I don’t see how something not being seen in game can trump something in the book.

How does nothing trump something? You never see thorough space battles in game, doesn’t mean they don’t happen.

Just because you don’t see blue team or other S-II’s in Reach doesn’t mean they weren’t there.

Double post

They are actually not. Books are equal if not inferior to the game. IF books
happen to interfere, it is 343s job to handle it.[they haven’t interfered yet]Halo Reach was a good example. It had supposedly broken canon, yet the game came on top.
The highest it can possibly get is if 343 confirms or disapproves.[whatever the topic may be]
If they don’t I think it is considered superior canon. So to sum it all up, the games are on top.

I’m pretty sure the games are top-priority when it comes to canon.

If I recall correctly bungies policy was that games trump the books when they come into conflict, and because we haven’t heard from 343 one way or the other people just assume the policy remains for Halo.

unless 343 says otherwise, games are top of the canon hierarchy.

I had a feeling it was for a debate.

343i treats all as one big inverse, not a hierarchy. I like that. I don’t like, extended universe, no. Same universe.

Can I see this debate?

I think it all depends on interpretation, I see Fall of Reach as more canon than the game and Silentium more than the Terminals

For the most people enjoying HALO, games and the coming TV series by Spielberg are top “canon”, while books are extended universe etc etc.

> Can I see this debate?

It’s on the spacbattles vs forum. There is a dedicated sect of Halo haters who ignore everything from expanded universe and only debate via the games.

So they use the in atmosphere mac burst the Grafton fires as the highest level for macs, Covenant Plasma torpedos fly as slowly as those fired by Shadow of Intent at the Citadel shields, All battles in space take place at close range because of Halo 3 and Halo Wars… ect ect. It’s trolling and spite posting, but after a dozen different threads the same argument has gotten incredibly old.

So I was hoping there was a statement from TPTB about everything being stacked unless directly contradicted by the games.

I’ve met people like that. ARRRRGGGGGG!

Ah, your referring to the Halo 3 teaser trailer.

Yeah, I wouldn’t say that is canon, as the event plays out different in the game.

The same with the Halo 4 teaser trailer, the events of the trailer and the events of ‘Dawn’ are very different.
In this case, you go with the game.

However, something like Landfall or Deliver Hope, that isn’t contradicted by any other media can be considered canon.
