Unit Y abilities

What do you think about the Y abilities in the game so far? I’ve noticed that very few units actually have one and I wish more had it. When it comes to infantry the core only get Y abilities. I would personally like to see some added to hunters and cyclops for an upgrade purchase. It doesn’t have to be super good but I think it would just be nice to have variety. Let me know what you guys think. I in no way want to make units OP with these, I just want to see more upgrade abilities for units.

i feel every unit should at least have one upgrade it’d be nice to see new stuff like that

How it is is fine

very few units have Y abilities? I think its about half and half. Its not quite like it was in halo Wars 1 obviously where i think almost every unit had a y ability when fully upgraded.

I agree it is fine, I just think it would make the game more diverse if more were added.

This game always felt incomplete to me because not every unit gets at least one upgrade I can’t think of another rts that does this

It would be cool if Hunters had a ram ability.

Would take me back to countless CE deaths.

Yep, they could run forward, raise their fist up, and slam it down on an opponent, that would be cool, I’d also like to see Cyclops be able to do that like in the original HW.

Yeah I wish more units had Y abilities, as well as unit upgrades.

Most of the new units have ay abilities like the -Yoink!- wagon -Yoink!- shell, or the phantom’s transport. But it always concerned me how one of the best things about HW1 didn’t make it through:

Multiple upgrades with visual enhancements.
Y abilities for most units.

A little off topic, but has anyone else noticed that you have to press ‘Y’ multiple times for all of your units to use their ability?

Starcraft 2 comes to mind. Having global unit-type upgrades and minimal individual unit upgrades is pretty standard in most RTS. It’s a departure from Hw1 and has it’s pros and cons, but I think it balances out.

Most abilities outside of cloak are mono-cast, meaning one unit will use it for press of the Y button. That’s why you need to spam it.

Fair enough. I would prefer that all units use it like in Halo Wars 1, or at least have a toggle option for it.

I agree a toggle would be awesome haha, I’m just saying why it happens. Being able to focus fire abilities like canister shell or phoenix missiles would be great… oh well. The confines of a controller I guess.

To be honest, I like things the way they are. I feel like no every unit needed a Y ability. I’m actually glad we have Passive Units again.

Yes, this is actually a good thing. For example, at the beginning of Halo Wars 2 the marine grenade ability would be set off for all marines at once if used. This lead to all marines throwing grenades at one squad and leaving the others untouched with you out of grenades for all marine squads.

I wish it were a little more reliable. If I have 3 marine squads with grenades, I can target one enemy, press Y, choose another target and press Y again, and then target a third enemy, and the marines usually all throw their grenades at each target.

However, if I have a group of 4 Frostravens and 3 Vultures all selected, and I want to rush their base and command other units while they attack, I aim at their base and press Y three separate times and the birds move and start attacking.

I unselect them and have a different group of various ground units flank the enemy to distract them. Looks like a pretty good, coordinated attack. Then I go back to check on my Vultures and Frostravens to find out they haven’t fired any of their Phoenix Missiles. I don’t know why.

Was just about to comment this. I’m actually glad not all units have Y abilities and upgrades. I felt like the dedicated Counter Units don’t need Y abilities. But should get upgrades. But I also feel like some units are fine not needing upgrades. I.E.Wolverines, besides HW1 I’ve never seen a Wolverine with a single launcher it always default comes out as Dual Launcher.

Not every unit needs a Y ability, but it’ll be awesome if every unit had upgrades.
