Unidentified Alien Vessel - The "Meddlers"

Thought I’d make a dedicated thread for the discussion around the topic of the the “Meddlers” seen in the Halo CEA Terminal #5 (Assault on the Control Room).

Not much is known about this unidentified alien vessel however we do know some information.

  • The vessel crashed approximately 60,000 years after (40,000 BCE) the Halo Array, predating any advanced Human or Covenant civilisations.
  • Guilty Spark remarks how the atmosphere composition within the vessel was similar to that of Installation 04.
  • The ship design, while unable to be attributed to any known species, shows a striking resemblance to that of the Ancient Human ships.
  • We also know that this isn’t the last time someone would visit the ring-world, with Guilty Spark mentioning in Conversations from the Universe that he’s “seen it all before, they’ll record what they see and they’ll leave”

With such little info it’s uncertain if we will ever know who these “Meddlers” really are. Truly one of the greatest mysteries in the Halo Universe yet to be uncovered.

What do you guys think? A new species we are yet to encounter? Some ancient Human/San Shyuum/Forerunner ship?

I’m not sure we have enough evidence to get any more out of the meddlers yet, that said I’d love to see that expanded upon be it harbinger or something else entirely.

Me too. Would be cool with the new Halo CE mod tools if we could get some alternate campaign mission where Chief and Cortana find the sarcophagus of the ship and explore inside, perhaps revealing the true nature of the species that inhabited it. There is a slim possibility that the ship and its surrounding sarcophagus could have survived on an intact fragment of Installation 04 which would be a cool way to expand upon it, but yeah very slim chance I feel.

Actually here is a fun fact. I was the one to first use the term “meddlers” for mystery aliens in the Halo franchise. I mainly used it as a term for aliens who actually did meddling, like the aliens who visited after the crashed species on Alpha Halo (IE the Crash species are not meddlers). Or those who attacked ships causing the discovery of a shield world. I however mistakenly kept using it with an uppercase M and boom it became a whole thing.

I actually created a Halopedia page recently to help rectify this issue recording all cases of mystery aliens in Halo where I dont use the term “meddler” as a primary description factor!

Aww man. The Great Dense Cloud species is devastating. Just sent out an interstellar ’greetings’ right before the Halo Array wiped out the galaxy.

I hope this plotpoint gets revisited at some point and catches us by surprise

Damn that is sad…

On topic I think that the “Meddlers” aren’t really defined yet and are just a plot point which could possibly be used later on in the Halo story. If they don’t find any meaningful way to further develop/incorporate them in the story they’ll just let it be a mystery.

Not really. For comparison (hoping that I can post links) these are the ships of Ancient Humanity (https://www.halopedia.org/images/b/bf/H4-Terminal-Forthencho-Fleet.jpg), whereas this is the unidentified ship (https://www.halopedia.org/images/c/c2/Alien_ship_2.png). It has a drastically different profile, and looks more like a Reaper from Mass Effect than anything else.

I do not think that the meddlers ship was ever meant to be a huge plot point. If you remember there was rocks that had forerunner symbols on them that lead the pillar of autumn to the installation. So logic could dictate that maybe it was a ship from another species. It kind of looks like it could be maybe a early covenant ship. I think it was just meant to be one of the many things that happened to 343 guilty spark during his long isolation.

Well to me they look quite similar in architecture, but without any other views we cannot confirm nor deny. To be honest though I doubt that they would be Ancient Humans, otherwise Guilty Spark would have recognised them.

What’s this, now?

Originally the Pillar of Autumn made a random slipspace jump to escape Reach, and wound up mysteriously at Installation 04. In Halo Reach we learn that Cortana got the coordinates from the Forerunner ship buried in the ice at Babd Catha.

I think that’s what he meant, though it wasn’t known what the coordinates lead to. Is it then the case that Cortana randomly selected a set of coordinates to then jump to, which ended up being the set of coordinates she found in the ship and ultimately led to Halo? Or was it known that there might be something of interest there to check out?

Fall of Reach (book) had the ‘random jump’ always being actually specific coordinates that Chief retrieved on a rock from a museum on Sigma Octanus IV.

Look up the Sigma Octanus IV artefact cause apparently I’ve been stripped of link privileges.

Yeah, you’re right. Also just read it in my original The Fall of Reach copy. Apparently the Forerunner ship at Babd Catha aided in decrypting the artifact, per Halo Reach’s epilogue and Halo Mythos.

Nope, Cortana used the coordionates found on the unidentified forerunner devices descriped as “rocks”. It was a random jump for Kexs, but not Cortana, since she thinks simularly to Halsey.

To be honest I always found the rock explanation really weird. Why would the coordinates to a mobile battle station (that can wipe out all life n the galaxy) be engraved on a rock.
