Unfocused Mumblings about Vehicles, Controllers, Mice and Keyboards

I started Playing Halo when the MCC came to PC and I’ve always used a MnK to play. There’s been at least one big thread about how bad the Vehicles are, And I as a self designated Wheelman disagree with a lot of what was said. So using a spare controller that I have I decided to test what the vehicles felt like on that, get some alternate perspective.

Warthog/Mongoose/Razorback:
MnK: To me playing normally, the Warthog feels the best it’s ever been it’s responsive and steering with the camera feels natural to me. The tendency for the Warthog to flip is definitely there, and to me that’s a good thing, keeping the thing from flipping is half the fun of driving it. But it is not flipping on a dime for me, with rare exception, when this thing flips over a “Pebble” it’s always been because at least two of my wheels were already off the ground, or because a grenade or other explosive bumped the Vehicle around. And this is one of the easier warthogs to recover from a flip at that. Although the map design does lend itself to Warthogs and Mongoose getting wedged between trees, if someone hits a jump wrong.

Gamepad: The Controls initially felt more clunky, A feeling that dissipated the more I drove. I found the warthog just as easy to keep from tipping, the biggest drawback I feel a controller has compared to a MnK is that sharp turns require more effort. Those who might want a little extra control over the vehicle might like to try out “Movement Assisted Steering”.

Ghost:
The only difference in controls was the Controller Ghost felt slower to turn, but that might be a problem with the default settings.

Scorpion:
I can get it to semi-consistently spawn in a Fiesta game on a BTB map, as vehicle spawns are randomized there which include Wraiths and Scorpions. The scorpion feels too heavy, on both MnK or Controller. The turning radius is far to wide especially with the Cramped BTB maps. No the scorpion can’t turn in place unless you do what is essentially a 5 point turn. It makes strafing with the scorpion far more clumsy than in previous games. I’ve gotten to use it in Multiplayer once. In a Fiesta game on Launch Site. The Gun was Adequately powerful.

Wraith:
Control wise it doesn’t feel all that different between MnK and Controller or even from past games. The biggest difference is that the Projectile it shoots is smaller and faster.

My single experience of driving the thing in Multiplayer was during a Fiesta match Behemoth, it spawned where a mongoose usually spawns. There is a lot less prediction involve in landing hits with the Mortar, and it was a Splattering machine, but that was probably due to nobody having experience fighting these rare as Unicorns Tanks in this game and everyone was trying to board. I only lost the Wraith when the enemy team got a hold of a Scorpion that spawned in the other Mongoose spot. I eventually boarded and stole the scorpion but there was 3 seconds on the clock at that point so don’t think it counts. Closest thing to Big Team Heavies I’ve found in this game.

Banshee:
Same camp as the Ghost feels more sluggish on Controller.

Banshee bomb can’t kill in a single hit as far as I can tell. That’s not as bad as it sounds, as a spartan in the blast radius tends to fall to one or two shots from the Blaster, seems the best way to use it is to constantly switch between weapons. I’ve gotten Frenzies doing that alone, and it is still the easiest thing to get splatters with. Although something to note is that this Banshee’s Bomb is not affected by gravity so aiming above where you want to hit will make you miss.

Wasp:
Flies like a Ghost with adjustable height not much to say except that it’s in the same camp as the Banshee and Ghost.

I’ve yet to be in a Banshee V Wasp fight so I can’t say how they stack up.

Most of my controller Testing was done in an Empty BTB Fiesta custom game. Only way I know to get a lot of the more rare vehicles to spawn. So I don’t know how Aim Assist on Controllers would stack up to aiming with a MnK
