Hello 343 industries and anyone who may read this!
I have a question regarding the official ranking system.
A friend and I have gathered to play ‘Doubles’ together. We both started to play with each other from the very first to the very last of the 10 games that you need to rank in.
Hence we won and lost the same amount of games and played the same enemy team every single one of those 10 games.
Overall I had 113 kills, 96 deaths and 41 assists with an overall accuracy of 42.8, a KD of 3.0 and a win percentage of 60%.
My friend had 115 kills at the end, 104 deaths, 28 assists with an overall accuracy of 39.2, a KD of 2.0 and (obviously just like me) a win percentage of 60%.
By the end of those 10 games I ranked in Gold 2 and he ranked in Platinum 1!
Could you please explain to me how this would be fair? It is a MASSIVE gap, not just a small one (although even a small gap where I would rank in lower wouldn’t be justified)!
I am not happy with this! And it makes me lose interest in even trying to improve if there isn’t a reward in the end for all the hard work.
I am looking forward to some positive feedback.
Have a nice day…

The reason between the disparity of your ranks after qualifying this season is due to the ranks you had at the end of last season. Last season, you were a Silver 6 in Doubles. Your teammate was Gold 4. Ranks for new seasons are calculated based on win/loss percentage of qualifying matches, the level of your opponents in the qualifying matches, and your rank from the previous season. In your case, the first two conditions were constant between you and your teammate, so the deciding factor ends up being your rank last season. Both of you have ended up with higher ranks in Doubles than you did last season, and for both of you your ranks went up by about the same amount (your rank went up 4 levels from last season, while your friend only went up 3 levels). Your new ranks therefore sound consistent. The reason previous ranks are a factor in qualifying for a new season is to prevent someone from getting carried to super high ranks by partying up with higher skilled players. If you had paired up with an Onyx, would you expect to end up in Onyx after qualifying? That would be an inaccurate assessment of your rank. If you want qualify in Platinum like your friend, you’ll need to rank up this season to around Gold 5 or 6; then next season if you have a good set of qualifying matches, you’ll probably end up in Plat.

I get what you’re saying re being carried to super high ranks by partying up with higher skilled players. Clearly I would not expect to end up in Onyx after playing with an Onyx player. However, I do expect to be ranked equally with someone who did just as good or bad as myself. If a former Diamond player did just as good or as bad as a former Silver player in the new season, they should both qualify equally and not higher or lower because of their former rank. Maybe the higher ranked player did worse than normally or the lower ranked player has improved a lot. **Why punish one and give the other one an advantage because of how they ranked in the season before?**So again, I am not expecting to necessarily rank in higher; I only expect me or another person to rank in equally when both players have an equal score while playing the same enemies. To me that is just common sense.

That’s not how ranking works in Halo 5. Personal performance has no bearing; only win/loss, and the ranks of the opponents you win/lose against. Using previous ranks as a baseline for qualifying is the system’s way of seeing how much better or worse you were from before. If previous rank was ignored, then any two players who group up in Doubles for 10 qualifying games would end up with the same rank at the end, no matter what the differences in their rank before. You weren’t punished in your qualifying matches. In fact, as I said, you went up by more levels from your previous rank than your teammate did. If you want your ranks to be essentially the same, you’ll need to play with that friend alot more. As you are ranked lower than him, when playing together you’ll gain more CSR for victories than him, and you’ll lose less CSR than him for losses, eventually bringing your ranks closer in line. Or, you will have to play on your own in Doubles, raise your rank that way until hitting around Plat 1, and end the season with that so it becomes your new baseline.
Okay. I am sure I’ll rank in higher next and every upcoming season as I seem to keep improving.
Thank you so much for your quick responses
Have a good rest of your day.
