Under what context is this whole Barbie Spartan thing?

Look, I love cosmetics as much as the next guy, I’m always working to find that best fit.

In H:Reach it was Commando with brim, Commando L CqcR and tac recon chest with fjpara and a soft case

In 4 it was mostly protector with a few rotating leg pieces and so forth.

In 5 it was nigh impossible for me to find a fit.

My question is where do you draw the line?

If my Spartan is solid tactical with environmental camo BUT it has Cat ears im playing dress up?

Are you not playing dressup the moment you use a coating, change armor or especially wearing and HCS kit?

I get a lot of people are upset about resources being allocated more towards cosmetics than fixing things like desync, better anti cheat implementation, or an actual cross play filter; but is coining the phrase “Barbie Spartan” against your fellow players going to help bring resources to the aforementioned technical issues?

Usually I don’t care but honestly where is the line?

It’s just a cheap and sexist way to be dismissive of players who enjoy customising their characters. We’re talking about a video game, but this perspective is often lost.

I don’t agree with the whole anti-dress up or whatever narrative.

BUT I do want a toggle to disable all non-canon cosmetics like HCS skins, VFX and cat ears ect. I love playing Spartan dress up and I’d rather keep my experience as immersive as possible.

Accessibility is as best as it’s ever been in today’s gaming age. From, the inclusion of colour blind options to having just about any cosmetic someone could want.

There’s no reason Halo fans that adore the world and it’s art style can’t be catered to as well.

No matter how bad in taste you or I might consider it. I don’t like weapon charms, they’re tacky. But I’m fine with it if you love them.

Add the toggle, 343. Pretty please. People who love extreme cosmetics will forget about it inside of a fortnight tops.

Its sad how the player base was so united against the h4/5 MP armor, but for some reason making armor that’s even more out of place is a-okay, and even some part of the fanbase wants to impose on others.

343 decided to empower trolls-as long as those trolls love to dump their money on them. Low integrity

Honest question - what makes something in-game canon or not?

Generally speaking, all fractures and VFX are non canon.

And, a dose of common sense helps. Obviously the cat ears aren’t canon, just as the Mohawk, pineapple grenades, teddy bear, HCS skins and whatnot aren’t canon.

If you really aren’t sure, just ask yourself if a real military would make it or a Spartan would wear it for real. Using the logic of the universe, we all can tell cat ears and calling cards aren’t canon.

Just like the haunted helmet in reach.

I guess what I’m getting at is that all 343 has to do is say something is canon and then it is.

I kind of assumed that since the games are the core part of the franchise that if it was in the game it was canon. There’s nothing in-game that says the fractures are not canon. I only know that because of these forums.

Would it be fair to say if it’s not in the encyclopedia it’s not canon?

The encyclopedia doesn’t cover everything.

And I don’t think we need a static yes or no on what’s canon.

It really just requires common sense.

I honestly thought that was how canon worked - a binary yes/no on stories and items that the company decides on.

Thanks for the replies.

why care? it’s just cosmetics, isn’t it?

I’m sure if you asked, you’d get a yes no.

But that hasn’t been done for every single piece of anything added to every Halo game.

So on that front, yes we use common sense.

I guess whether it “fits the art style” or “is serious”. I almost always use cat ears as my example, they fit the art style, they can easily have a serious canonality to them, and are on the Mk VII core. But people just say,
“b…b…b…but silly!!! they look like a cat!!!”

Teddy bear is canon, surprisingly. It was used by a Spartan II after being gifted it by her cloned self. Hence the name “Clonely Bear” and description (which roughly) says, “When you just aren’t feeling quite yourself.”
Pineapple grenades also could easily be painted, and I doubt the UNSC would be opposed to extra ordnance being carried by spartans.

A straw man. They could not easily be serious canon as no self respecting military would make something like that and imitating animal aesthetics isn’t a thing in the UNSCs design catalogue.

I guess if we could wear Johnsons Cap on top of our helmets that’d be canon too. Right?

It’s an in-universe item. But it was never worn by said Spartan on the exterior of her armour. Nor is it something a million random Spartans would have…

In regards to the grenades, I guess. But even then you can take it or leave it.

Do you use headphones while you play? Have you used headphones?

Sure, if we really wanted it to be. I personally wouldn’t, I’d rather his mustache. But I guarantee other people would.

Definitely could have been. They let a Spartan III scratch up his helmet after all. A Spartan II could probably have a bear.

I guarantee they can make more. Especially for Spartans.

It’s when you become overly dramatic about the armor you like/don’t like to the point where you start begging/asking/demanding for toggles so you don’t see.
I feel like this whole dress up complaint meta started because this game has very little to offer, causing a few people to blow tiny inconsequential things, like cat ears, out of proportion.

No. Neither are any of the posts made by “Barbie™ Spartans” where they complain about armor effects and cat ears.

See man, you’re just joking and being silly at this point. Also Emile did that to his pre-existing equipment and it didn’t effect his ability to see.

But you get my meaning, you’re stretching the logic really thin. And we both know that.

I wouldn’t mind the cap, or putting a moustache on your visor or a snow man head for Christmas. Bring it all on.

Just let me opt out if I want to just enjoy Halo as the universe it is.

Very aware of the story, helmet was trashed, Kat said to go nuts. And, yeah, people who think that it did affect his ability to see haven’t played Pillar Of Autumn. I mean, two birds (banshees) with one stone (grenade)? That’s not easy.

Yeah, I can get why there should be a filter, I just don’t see it working as envisioned.

I wholly agree it’s cheap. But how is it sexist??? Please elaborate? What are you trying to get at??? Body size/styles? Literally everything I’ve ever seen where unisex items. Aka men using bright pink with the smallest body styles, and women going full tac mode with the reach core, making the most tactical death Spartans I have ever seen. There’s literally nothing sexist about the game. All the cosmetics, how they’re applied, etc; are all unisex items and are utilized by every man, woman, non binary, homosexual, heterosexual, pansexual, transgender Person to ever play the game. It’s simply their imagination in how they build their spartan….

Only a close minded person would fathom that anything in this game is/has sexist content. Quite frankly it’s annoying when people constantly play the “oh nooo it’s sexist” card. Doom has had angry feminists on its tail since 2016 release. It’s dumb but goofy to watch.

Note I don’t entirely agree with the “body shape” system it does kinda work. Do I think they need to add female body styles and have them separated from male body styles? For sure! But it is an “ok” step in the right direction. They just need a little push. Which quite frankly not a lot of people are worried about right now considering the state the game is in.

(Buuut the people who are mainly worried about it are hardcore kat fans if you catch my drift, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t agree with them)

As for the voices I think it’s a good system. 4 male voices and 4 female voices. I do wish they added accents tho so I could release my inner British  (am literally related to a British pirate)
