Under the Cover of Night and Arrival

So, first off, I’m a huge fan of the Halo soundtracks, and I have all of them and listen to them time to time. Also, I support the fact that the Halo 4 soundtrack does indeed sound like Halo. I’ve listened to all the soundtracks enough and so many times to hear and pick up all the hidden riffs and motives and inspiration hidden in the Halo 4 music pieces. One such, something I didn’t realize until recently, is in the Halo 4 song “Arrival,” composed by Neil Davidge, and I realized that the beginning riff sounds like the main repeating riff in the Halo 1 song “Under the cover of night” or “cloaked in blackness” from the anniversary soundtrack. I listened to the two songs again, or at least at the beginning of the two songs, and I heard that they are indeed similar, and that Arrival’s beginning is Just Under the cover of night’s beginning flopped. By that I mean it’s the same riff, but opposite notes, like high notes become low notes and low notes become high notes. For those of you who know these two songs, listen to them again(listen to cloaked in blackness for better quality) and try to hear what I’m talking about. What do you all think?

Damn, you’re right! It really does sound the same! . . . Sure, it’s not easy to pick up, but I don’t think it ever was meant to be. So many hate Halo 4’s soundtrack when, in retrospect, it pays an awesome homage to the original soundtrack. You just have to hold the correct ears for hearing these subtle references.

As if Arrival wasn’t already a good enough track!

Haha and the fact that the same riff from Cloaked in Blackness/Under the Cover of Night is going to be in Halo 5. The riff, like the classic halo theme, loves to pop up here and there. XD

I found the subtle references in Halo 4 fitting, but I think Halo 5: Guardians needs to include more tracks that play with our nostalgia. Nostalgia is the best weapon 343i can use against us–it’s the same weapon a portion of the fanbase use to dish hatred onto 343i. It’s the same weapon that makes a majority of the fanbase love the original trilogy so much.

I believe Kazuma Jinnouchi will do an excellent job at doing just that, while maintaining the new and epic feel he has already established and given us from the H4 soundtrack, by combining the nostalgia with his own works and Davidge’s. I mean, based on all that I’ve heard from H5, I’ve heard a little bit of all games but odst, wars, reach, Spartan assault and strike. But they’re subtle, yet so obvious, intertwined with the new sound of the reclaimer saga and uniqueness of Guardians.

I agree one hundred percent. People complain about Halo 5’s Beta music, but we have yet to see the full power the soundtrack with have. So far, we have seen a huge nod in the final cover art animation trailer, which means that 343i may be revealing the epic tastes of the soundtrack during reveals. I wonder what the E3 will bring . . .

Jinnouchi’s music has a more immediate and visceral appeal than Davidge’s, but Neil is nonetheless underrated. I’m glad somebody’s picking up on that.

Halo 4’s music is underrated to the extent that people downright hate it, or claim that it was good, but nothing memorable. I disagree. While some tracks will be forgotten (Not for me; I listen to the ost constantly) I do believe that tracks like 117, To Galaxy, and Arrival will be remembered by a majority of the community for a long time to come, and these tracks can become iconic to the Halo franchise in time–they won’t be iconic after one game, and I hope that no one really thinks that.

Very much agreed. Have you checked the similarities if not direct reference between Cloaked in Blackness and Arrival?

The Halo soundtracks are the best I have ever heard.

Preach the good word.
