Halo 5 still had better writing than every bungie game. 343i finally gave 117 some character, they acknowledged the nylund novels, they portrayed a nuanced and multidimensional story.

While everyone’s opinion varies (as I can clearly see between the two of you) my opinion lies in the middle-ground.
Halo 5’s writing was pretty terrible. Let me explain why I think so:
In Halo 5, 343 added a very terrible character (Locke) in an attempt to pave the way for Chief to die and let Locke take the torch. Fanbase didn’t take that too well and now there’s a different plot change for Halo 6 than 343 was probably planning. just a guess, but a pretty good one.
Another problem with Halo 5 was the amount of filler in the campaign. For instance, killing Jul 'Mdama was pretty terribly executed. He was dead after about 15 minutes of playing the game, which resulted in that portion being nothing but filler. 343 wanted to get Halsey back and continue with the story so fast that they killed Jul with the snap of their fingers. Well…there was story opportunities with Jul that 343 clearly did not see.
And whatever happened to 343’s plans with the artifact??? The one that lead to “Ships, weapons, bounties beyond our imagining” in Spartan Ops? 343 had some really good opportunities for the story, and they kind of just dropped that where it was…it’s a real shame, too. If I were a 343 game developer, I would’ve made Chief search out Halsey and rescue her while imprisoning Jul for navigation and translation or whatever purposes (with a fight your way to the terminal sort of scenario) Then attempting to find the secret forerunner loot/stuff. (make them be dropped into the hotzone like ODSTs, similar to Chief in Halo 2) If they had done that, they could’ve incorporated Liang Dortmund as the one who wants to activate the guardians and using The Warden eternal as the one who believes AI’s are the rightful owners of the mantle, etc. (Chief would have to explore and investigate Liang like Osiris did) THEN, Chief would call in Blue team to do some more shooting/ whatever. If I had more time to spare, I would make this have a little more sustenance…It would be more gritty, they would eventually kill 'Mdama in his cell (which would be very gritty).
Now Multiplayer:
I really enjoyed H5’s multiplayer. The maps were well designed, gameplay fast and fun, just overall enjoyable for me. I had no problems whatsoever with the multiplayer. I loved it.
Artstyle:
I personally love H5’s artstyle. It makes the game look very futuristic, whereas Halo 3 for instance doesn’t seem like it would be 500 years in the future. Everything on Halo 5 is very futuristic, has lots of details, and looks like their tech would only appear in the distant future.
Those are my thoughts.
