So to keep this short. I have just received word that once you pick up the flag in Halo4, you cannot drop it. Is this true? If so, this does encourage teams and players to stare at a flag, because I know I am sure as hell not touching that death pole now.
Its an extremely silly concept that im sure stems from people who cried because they didnt like to hear “Flag taken. Flag dropped” in repetition for a few seconds.
I for one, given my playstyle and years of gaming know that I will avoid making an attempt at flags because of this. Also, given my years of experience with playing with people, I know others will do the same and we will all have different excuses.
“Hey man, I have the rockets, I dont want to lose them.”
“Yeah bro, but im controlling the spawn from a crucial location on the map.”
“Well Im not doing it. I just got the sniper.”
“Dont even look at me, I havent died yet and I want to keep my K/D up”
I am hoping that this is just a rumor that came my way and is certainly not true. Because if you havent thought through a simple concept that has been in the game for a decade now, I have very little faith in your abilities to develop a balanced/fun game in an already declining series.
(For those just getting here. Some good points in favor of “classic CTF” have taken place on pages 3,4,5,and a little on 6.)
I like it. Its fresh and innovative, which is what Halo needs to survive. 343 says its balanced. The game cant be designed for MLG. I hate the announcing saying flag taken, flag dropped, flag taken, but I do like the announcer when he says “hold the ball to get points”. It has more teamwork. It takes skill.
> Bro, but you get a Pistol that appears out of nowhere!! Ground-breaking!!
That almost hurt my ribs. Too funny. So I guess it is true.
Why are companies grasping at new silly concepts to try and innovate, yet destroying already working ideas?
Fine, wanted to add something new to the flag system, something creative? Cool, we get a pistol to fire off. How is the next logical step to that addition being to make the flag now undroppable? I want to know what group of 12 people sat around the table and all nodded in agreement to that concept. Does not a single person stand up and say, “wait a second, are we sure thats a good idea?” How do these things make it into the final game?
Truthfully, what was the reasoning? Did you logically think it would work out well in the real world? Sure it works in the offices. Youre all working 36737478 hours on this game, and when you get a break to play or test what your creating youre all thinking about different things and randomly enjoying some free time. So you randomly grab a flag, fire your pistol, and die. Same goes for everyone else just running about, so yuou assume people in the real world will do the same. They will not. This will not be enjoyable online where people are a little more conscious about the game then the designers are going to be.

Makes you wonder how things like sprint, jetpack, armor lock, and a non pick-up camo made it into the multiplayer as well.
I think the most ironic and mind-numbing aspect of this entire premise is the fact that 343 has been running around going ad-nausea over how this game will be all about “choice” and “play-style”: choose different weapon loadouts depending on how you want to play, choose different armor abilities and specializations to suit how you want to play, choose different support and tactical packages, etc…but then we get to flag mechanics and guess what? You now have NO choice. Touch the flag and you automatically pick it up. No choice. Start running the flag and you are now stuck with it until you either cap it or die. No choice. You cant even CHOOSE to play sneaky with the flag in your hands because the game freaking tells everyone where you are at all times. No choice.
Well I think I like this idea. It will keeps non-objective based people not playing! In Reach it was all about K/D and lots of people used objective to boost and I for one hated that! So by someone not being able to drop the flag and you only recieveing a pistol you’ll NEED support which increases team play. However rather than drop the flag I think it would be a good idea if you were able to hand off the flag to a teammate by pressing a certain button!

That does nothing to stop people from going into the game and completely ignoring the flag, using CTF as a team slayer gametype with no kill limit.

Uhhhh, how? The people who want to stat will simply stay as far away from the flag as possible. If anything this will encourage them even more to stay away from the flag at all cost.
OP, may I suggest you (re)post your thoughts in this thread, after having a read through it? Out of all the threads on this topic, it’s the most sober one (with the exception of a few of the shorter posts) and there are substantive and logical arguments made by many who are either for or against these new mechanics. If anything, it’s a good read, with more in-depth discussions than those in many of the other threads related to these new additions to the CTF variant.

People like you are the reason dumb game concepts get the ok, and continue to be pushed forward. What you just said has absolutely nothing to do with anything. I just explained this in a huge WALL-o-TEXT in another thread, and dont wish to rant here again.
This in noway will encourage people to participate in teamwork. It has no bearing on the concept. Stat-whores will still stat--Yoink!-, onjective players will play objective.
This actually hurts tge concept of teamwork because of middle ground players like me. I like to setup, and help dominate a map and slightly slay while helping an objective move forward. Im a rare flag grabber but I will when I feel it benifits the team. I cant tell you that I will now almost never be touching that dam flag. Im not giving up my positioning, my ability to slay, and decision making so that I can be stuck numbified by this new death pole concept, and leaving my life in the hands of my teammates. No, I will continue to role play and let someone else touch it.

“OK guys, get this! so instead of having to camp with snipe and wait for camo to spawn and move around the map, lets just let you spawn with it so you can sit invisible in a bush!”
“OMG DUDE! I do that in CoD and Battlefield and it is a flippin’ blast except this time i get to be invisible?! You are a genius!”

Exactly. I cant fathom how everyone nods in agreement to such a statement. If I was at that table my face would drop from such a stupid statement. Yet, it made its way in.
