UEG = United Earth Government.
UNSC = United Nations Space Command.
I’ve always found it a little strange that the name of Earth’s governmental authority is the UEG, but its military uses the term “United Nations”. Seems a bit contradictory to me: if the powers that be are called the UEG, than the military representing those powers should be called the “United Earth Government Space Command” (UEGSC) or even the “United Earth Space Command” (UESC). Does anyone have a plausible reason why Earth’s judicial and executive branches would be named differently?
Bonus question: can anyone cite when the term “UEG” was first used in Halo? I only remember hearing/seeing it used in recent years, and they’re making a big point of mentioning it in Hunt the Truth, but I only remember seeing “UNSC” mentioned in the Nylund trilogy, Contact Harvest, and The Cole Protocol.
Thanks!
The UEG technically first appeared back in 2001 on the Xbox.com’s Halo story page, at the time, it was called “a unified Earth government”. So, technically the UEG, but technically not. As for it’s first actual apperance, I’m not 100% sure, but I think it was mentioned in Ghosts of Onyx and Contact Harvest. I could be wrong. At the very least, I know it was brought up in Dr. Halsey’s Journal, the bonus item included with Halo Reach’s limited and Legendary editions.
But on to the question at hand. The UEG was created by the United Nations in 2075 as Humanity was first colonizing the Sol system, almost like a proto-CAA. The United Nations Space Command was created during the Interplanetary Wars of the 2160s, and it was only after this war the the UEG became a full-fledged governing body. In 2204, it finally gain full autonomy as Humanity’s governing body.
So basically, the UEG was created at a time when the UN was still around and given a slightly different name to avoid confusion with the UN proper. The United Nations Space Command was created almost a century later, and it’s name was given so it would be recognized as the military arm of the UN, which was still the head of Human governments at the time. Both have since evolved beyond what they were originally created for, but the names are hold-overs from those early days.
