I am just wondering why a captain is in charge of the Infinity.
It is such a huge ship and is supposed to be exploring the galaxy. So why isn’t there a higher ranking officer to speak on behalf of mankind?
I know Captain is pretty close to the top. But i thought the Infinity was the pride and glory of the U.N.S.C.
I might be wrong but I thought there is Rear Admiral Lower, Rear Admiral Upper, Vice Admiral, Admiral and then Fleet Admiral.
Im hoping there is someone out there that knows whats going on that can shed some insight as to what is going on, and what the higher ranking officers are up to.
Like the previous guy said. A captain can only command one ship. Admirals would have to focus on mulitple ships rather then giving the “infinity” the attention it deserves. No doubt the ONI director is keeping an eye on it. But having a Captain devoted to the ship is the best thing that can be done.

"Captain" doubles as an enlisted Navy rank and as the title of the highest senior person/ ranking officer of the ship. i.e. An admiral can be considered the captain of a ship if they are directly in charge.

Don’t forget the Charon class frigates that deploy from the Infinity, I would imagine that Lasky/Del Rio have command over those to an extent, also it isn’t Navy related but wouldn’t being in charge of the Spartan Fireteams count as something

Is Lasky a Commander and Captain of the ship? or did he get promoted to Captain also?

he is the highest on-board but he receive his order from AdmiralParagonski and AdmiralHood to an extend. so he decide what goes on with the ship but not the mission as a whole…
if you read Thursday War, Lasky was originally chosen by Admiral Parangosky as the captain of the Infinity. However, because of how much of the UNSC budget the project took up, the several other high ranking UNSC officers had to be informed about it. Del Rio was actually only assigned as captain to appease Admiral Hood, to give him at least some control over Infinity. Parangosky actually thought Del Rio was an incompetent captain.

Captains are senior commissioned officers, not enlisted.
