Two Trilogies

Edit: Due to some responses I wanted to iterate up here at the top that this is a fan idea, of course there is the Original Bungie Trilogy, and then 343i’s Relcaimer Saga (Halos 4, 5, and Infinite, and whatever the future holds). This was merely a fun idea looking at what the Halo story holistically looks like to PC only players without having to go to YouTube or other places.

Thank you,

Hey gang,

Recently I made a post over on the Halo Infinite board playing with the idea of Halo Infinite being a sequel to Halo 4 / Halo Wars 2 rather than Halo 5: Guardians. The post wasn’t meant to dig at Halo 5: Guardians’ story, rather an exploration of how the story of Halo will be presented to PC only players through the games exclusively. Sure, the story of Halo 5: Guardians is available in many places besides playing the game, but I think this is a neat concept to play with while we all excitedly wait to find out the real story of Halo Infinite

Great discussion was had over there, but I had a new realization that I wanted to post here.

So thinking about each Halo title that will be available to PC players before Halo Infinite’s launch, I realized that if you play the titles in their release order, it creates these two trilogies that are separated by the Halo Wars titles.

  • Halo: Combat Evolved - Halo 2 - Halo 3Halo Wars

  • Halo 3: ODST - Halo: Reach - Halo 4Halo Wars 2

Given that Halo Wars 2 has been shown to have a significant impact to Halo Infinite’s story (although nothing I’m sure that isn’t easily figured out in just Halo Infinite), I’m curious how Halo 5: Guardian’s story will impact Halo Infinite’s story. Especially given Halo Wars 2’s ending obviously being related to Halo 5: Guardians. However I still enjoy playing with the idea of Halo Infinite’s story being presented in such a way that a Halo 5: Guardian’s playthrough isn’t required (again, not that any prior Halo title is truly required to understand the next.)

That was a lot of rambling, haha, but I enjoy thinking about trilogies and wanted to share this “fan trilogy” somewhere.

How do you mean odst, Reach, 4 is a trilogy?

Just 3 games. They aren’t connected so Trilogy isn’t the right word (I believe that’s what you were getting at), but I do like the idea of 3 games before each Halo Wars game.

Something the games in that “second trilogy” I suppose have in common is each have a relation to a game in the original trilogy.

  • Halo: Reach - Prequel to Halo: CE - Halo 3: ODST - takes place simultaneously as Halo 2. - Halo 4 - Takes place after Halo 3 (obviously, lol)Before, during, after. It’s not a serious break down just something fun to think about while waiting for Halo Infinite.

There is two trilogies 1 by Bungie now with Halo 6 marks 343i 3rd Master Chief game, maybe even they’re last one as 117 being the main character.

Well…remember that they said that Halo Infinite would be THE Halo game for the next 10 years? So I mean, you might not be wrong but the Master chief essentially is the FACE of Xbox. I’m not sure he is going anywhere.

Not to get technical, but Mjolnir is pretty much the true face of Xbox from the Halo perspective… More specifically, the standard Mjolnir helmet. Granted, we all know that’s Chief under that helmet, but it wouldn’t be impossible to make the face under that helmet a different person. My vote for a transition to another main character would be Jerome, for example.

My point here is that Chief is technically the face of the franchise, but to anyone who doesn’t know Halo beyond what they see in TV commercials and the occasional glance at a TV set while their friends are playing, the face at the forefront of Xbox games is actually just a futuristic helmet.

I mean, I don’t disagree with your statement…just a very difficult hurdle to make people get over a “master chief death.” I definitely wouldn’t mind a new team taking in the spot light. Or perhaps going on a one-off game style (ie Halo Reach). It also allows fore more halo lore to flourish and to be intertwined with the existing lore. But still…a Master Chief death? Doubtful for Microsoft to want to do.

Oh I agree it’s super doubtful. Chief dying would be a major risk, and 343/Microsoft are not in a position to take major risks yet. If Infinite goes well, then the next game could see it happen, but I’d be very surprised to see Chief exit the franchise during this upcoming installment.

My point was just that the average player who really isn’t all that interested in the finer points of Halo lore isn’t gonna be overly concerned with the fact that Chief isn’t the man behind the mask anymore. Heck I remember reading some article about a year ago suggesting most players don’t even play the campaign, and if they do, it’s only once. The rest of the time is spent in MP. It’s why most games nowadays focus a lot of effort on the MP experience while their story modes are rather bland and simple.

It’s one of many gripes of mine about H5. The MP experience in that game is considered top tier in many circles. I don’t like it because I’m a crabby old man who just wants to play my old school Halo games. But there are many out there who will say something to the effect of “H5’s story sucked, but the MP was great”. And that’s a big problem I have with the trend in AAA gaming. All other aspects of a game get placed second tier to the MP experience. H5’s story was bland, simple, and unimaginative while the MP was fun and exciting… it’s an unbalanced development method and Star Wars has taught us what happens when things are out of balance…

Not a bad idea at all. I’m old like you so I can relate.

I’m kind of on the side of just going with the two-trilogy system: Bungie’s saga and 343i’s iterations. Though the story from 4 to 5, and into Infinite is rather inconsistent and transfers poorly. The fast-forward retcon has been used a bit too much.
