Tenure-based (ala Reach)
A rank based on how much you play, how long you have been with the game, regardless of skill, for more casual gamers who love playing Halo.
Skill-based
HOWEVER, I believe skill should be CONTINUALLY proven, just like in any real professional sports medium.
Yes, I mean like in The Arena.
I truly believe that the hate the Arena got (other than due to the Jetpack, and perhaps how The Arena system determined rating) was that false competitives couldn’t get one ‘50’ and brag for 3 years. They could get numerous other 50’s and sell them.
Arena forced tryhards to be TRUE competitive players, and prove themselves time and again.
Bungie fixed the flaws of the 1-50 of Halo 3 with The Arena, and because their schemes no longer worked, the tryhards who thought 50’s were good and 1-49 were trash -Yoinked!- and moaned for the past 16 months.
This is, of course, open to debate.
No, don’t come in here and post that you want to again get one 50 and that’s it. If you’re a TRUE competitive player, you’ll have NO problem with continually having to get high ratings season after season.
Pretty much what i believe in. Have the progression system (reach) separate from rank, which the latter only increases in ranked playlists (assuming that’s what 343 is going to do) while the former is awarded based on play time (though from the recent sparkast, you’ll earn more points/rewards for doing good).
I disagree about The Arena though. Not a big fan of the failed concept.
A better idea is to take what worked with past ranking systems, ditch what didn’t and from this, create an evolution of ranking system we have not seen before.

What I would like to learn about in here, sir, is HOW people believed the concept failed.
I didn’t touch Arena until this Season, when all Armor Abilities were removed. And I enjoyed it. No, I’m not the best at it, because of the increased competitive atmosphere.
I’m not arguing that the Arema failed, it very may well have. But I’m hoping 343 tweaks the Arena to something people are happier with. The worst thing they could do, IMHO, is return to Halo 3’s 1-50.

Low population, long search times, twos trick, rank resets, iron boosting come to mind.
There was no incentive to reach the max “rank”. Most people had no idea what it meant or even where to find it.
Excessive search times.
A single 4v4 playlist, no 2v2 or FFA.
Deranker abuse is still present
In a similar fashion to the first point, Divisions weren’t shown on your nameplate or obvious on your record outside of Arena.
Uncompetitive maps (and settings before the removal of Jetpack)
Fix all of that, bring back the 1-50 TrueSkill system, show your highest seasonal (1 or 2 month long) ranking on your nameplate, get rid of derankers and this would make a perfect ranking system.

Vetoed, WHY should your Arena division be shown outside the Arena?
That to me, would just breed more of the elitist atmosphere that ran rampant through Halo 3. To this day, the elitism of 1-50 still severely tarnishes my opinion of this entire community.
Rank based upon: time spend playing (basically Cr/Spartan Points), individual numeric ranks, commendations, playing customs/Forge/Spartan Ops
Overall rank (so no overall numeric rank, but a composite Name + Number rank)
Primarily used to unlock Armory parts
Named rank should not primarily influence numeric rank, but it should be the other way around.
The named rank should then be used for matching in social playlists, Spartan Ops, Campaign (unless you specify “match similar “skill””) and should be a secondary measure of “skill” for ranked playlists. So that if the game doesn’t find people with a similar numeric rank to you, they could find those with a “experience” rank (named rank) that (somewhat) equals your numeric rank.
This also means both the self proclaimed hardcore gamers and the “casuals” both get their way. If you don’t really care about a number, you still get the rank up just for the sake of unlocking new armor (and maybe they should even link certain commendations to rank). And if you care about rank, you now have 2 ranks to care about (more actually, if you count every individual playlist rank…)

Elitism will always exist, regardless of the ranking system use. The more skilled you are, the greater the chance you develop an ego and can’t see why other players do so bad. Some legit 50s and a top 1 percent Onyx players will act this way because they are at the top. The best.
Well unless your bad and bought an account. Another reason why bringing back the 1-50 in Halo 3 as is a terrible idea.
