What breached the ship and why does the guy question Chief when he asks for status report?

And they are “We don’t know yet”, not much was revealed except for the new Chief Design & new Graphics card + the Halo ring
If I had to guess it would be 1: A Guardian’s EMP and 2: The guy forgot Chief had been out of it for X amount of time so he was briefly confused about why Chief wanted a status report.
Not a clue in the world. But just for the fun of speculating, I’ll say the Pelican was attacked by a Guardian and that Chief’s last memory before going unconscious was being in the middle of a battle.
Created are attempting to infiltrate the ship and the Pilot was surprised due to the battle already being lost, hence why we saw a broken halo ring.
As far as questioning Chief’s request for a status: It’s probably because the status of “We lost. Game over.” has been so for weeks or months as seen in the time skip in the trailer. He probably thought that Chief must’ve known that already.
