Tweak to Radar/Charge

one of the presumed reasons for a shortened radar distance is to prevent abuse of the Spartan charge. It’s a solution, but not a perfect one as it also diminishes the ability to counter someone charging from behind. My suggestion would be to increase the radar distance, but turn radar off during sprint. This would prevent abuse of the charge but also give a better ability to counter.

Thoughts on this tweak?

Remove shoulder charge all together. Why it was implemented with unlimited sprint is beyond me. But why did 343i do a lot of things who knows. But hey, at least we have more skins coming right?

I understand some people don’t like shoulder charge, but that’s not what this thread is about. I personally think it makes more sense and is better balanced than the ridiculous melee distances some previous Halos had.

But please stay focused on the topic of tweaking, not removing, existing mechanics.

That’s an idea I could support. I don’t think the current system is absolutely unfair, but Im not a fan of the play styles it encourages.

You just need an early warning of something coming towards you at speed.

Just like the radar lights up around the periphery to show you what direction you are being shot from… there could be a similar flash of colour to show someone is sprinting towards you. Or at least a warning sound.

That would at least give you a chance to take evasive action.

just remove that stupid ability all together why they added it idk it kinda goes against the "competitiveness they strive for by allowing for cheap kills because you dont have to stop sprinting to kill someone now

Radar is fine as is, the changes proposed would not prevent you from getting charged from behind, because most of the time no one is using the radar, if you were you would not be getting charged from behind as often.

This, and another big problem with Spartan Charge is after someone lands a charge on someone else, they can begin shooting again almost immediately, unlike regular melee.

Or they could increase the radar range to 25m so we get some actually useful information out of it.

Interesting take… I think I would try making the radar bigger, maybe as it was in past games or close to it when your not sprinting and make the radar smaller like it is now when you are sprinting.

If you don’t want to be on the radar, you can crouch. To avoid Spartan Charges, look at radar and when they come, do evasive maneuvers. For ex: Thruster away, jump, shoot them, etc.

obvious solution, make radar range useful. If I can be locked on and destroyed by a needler outside of radar range, that’s a problem imo. Contrary to popular belief, sprinting makes you very vulnerable and removing radar while sprinting would be jarring and suck bad. Best, not totally obvious ideal solution, make sprinters appear on enemy radar the same as an enemy vehicle. Vehicles create red indicators outside of radar range, making them easier to detect in most cases. Enemy spartans running top speed with arms flailing should also be easier to detect. It would help prevent ridiculous out of nowhere spartan charges.

One of the additional reasons for smaller range was to help cut down on camping and watching your tracker. This encourages people to move and engage the enemy, it’s still useful inside its effective range.

I use radar regularly. The problem is that a charging Spartan can cover the radar distance in a very short time, meaning that you during the time you aren’t looking at the radar a player can get on top of you before you have an opportunity to effectively counter. This doesn’t happen to me very often, but I think a small tweak could improve the gameplay. I’d even be fine leaving radar as is and just turning it off for Spartans that are sprinting.

I understand this, and I’m not saying it’s completely unbalanced. There are effective counters to Spartans charging from ahead. I just think that a sprinting Spartan should be slightly more vulnerable than they are currently.

Good point. I’m on the fence about whether radar should be increased or not. Do you agree with turning it off for sprinting Spartans?

Try Halo 4, you’ll probably prefer it as it doesn’t have any of the new spartan abilities.
