Turning Your Forge Creation Into A Real Map

I’ve been interested in creating Halo multiplayer maps from the very second I loaded up Halo 3’s forge. Simply moving around weapons and crates was enough to spark my desire to be apart of the creative world of map design. Since day one of forge, I spent my time blocking doorways on default maps with crates and teleporters in an attempt to redirect the flow of the map. Then on 3/18/08, the revolutionary forge-centric map “Foundry” was released. Opening up a huge window of opportunity, “Foundry” allowed us to fully create our own multiplayer map variants. There was something magical about this. Of course in the begining days, maps were very simple block by block arenas. However, throughout the years forge has become a massive part of the Halo community. With the introduction of interlocking objects, “geo-merging”, and “ghost-merging”, custom maps began to evolve into something special. Fast forward to this very day. Map making has become user friendly, but many forgers today still don’t quite understand what it takes to make great playing custom maps.

Now let’s get to the meat of this post. My idea is simple. A contest to bring in the best forgers out there. A forge contest to design a great playing custom map. I’m talking about something that really represents the essence of classic Halo multiplayer. Aesthetics of the map doesn’t matter, and here’s why… The best designed map and winner of the contest gets created into a real Halo map! Taking the bones of the map you design through forge and giving it a cosmetic and functionality upgrade. Turning the boring simple textures of a forge creation into a colorful new environment. This could be done through a DLC map pack, or standalone DLC exclusive. (Similar to “Cold Storage” from Halo 3.

I think this could be a great way to get the entire Halo community involved in either “The Master Chief Collection” or “Halo 5: Gaurdians”. Also to bring a forgers dreams of getting into the video game map design business a reality.

What do you guys think about ths? Please post comments, ideas, or criticism.
If you like the idea, spread it around via Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, Etc.

Cool idea in theory, but it will most likely never happen. The reason being it is not worth 343 to spend the extra time to put in the extra geometry, textures, etc to make the map look good; especially when it is already playable.

However, I do think they should have more forge contests, as right now it is difficult to get maps showcased to the right people.

Super cool idea, and it would be cool if 343 eventually had the resources to do it.

Good idea

Thats the beauty of it. With a contest with that big of a reward, tons of people would be interested and if advertised enough and correctly could get the Halo community back and more involved than ever. Obviously 343, or CertainAffinity would be able to tweak the map design, weapons, spawns, etc. It would not be as a huge undertaking as you may think.
It has already been announced that we are getting a remastered Relic for MCC, and Halo 3: ODST campaign. Not to mention back in Halo 3, we received a free DLC map: Cold Storage. That was Bungie’s doing, but the spirit is the same. In order for the halo custom community to regain strength, we need a reason to get involved once again. Something that will bring us together.
