Turn off Auto-Join Game in Progress

OMG 343, this is horrible. How could you think about including such an option but not allow us the ability to turn it off?? It took me nearly ten minutes to find a game in BTB yesterday only to find that it threw me into a game that was 3/4 over already and on a team that was down by 500pts.

So far I’m really enjoying WarGames but this wait time to find a game in progress is killing me. Please find some way to patch this and give us the option to only join a new game if we so choose.

343i; Don’t turn it off. It’s a great feature for social gaming and it can be helped to balance and overturn one-sided games. For ranked matches, I’d recommend this system be turned off though as it could quite easily ruin people’s ranks by a ‘luck’ factor which shouldn’t be relevant when it comes to ranking.

OP: For your exact reasoning, it took you nearly ten minutes to find a game and it put you in a game that was nearly complete… Imagine how much longer you’d have to wait if you couldn’t join any games in progress bceause your internet sucks that much?

Or have a better joining mechanic. i.e. game must be less than 50% complete, 1 team must be within X points of the other.

I’m not a fan of JIP as they’ve implemented it, but it does work sometimes, and is useful when you’re team is down a man. So I’d say, they should stick with it, but improve the criteria.

It’s a double-edged sword, in my personal opinion. I for one hated being constantly ditched by my entire team in Halo 2 and Halo 3, so the feature that new players can come in replacing the ones that leave at least help a little bit to not destroy the balance. On the other hand, I too find myself entering games that are pretty much already lost. But I find it helps a lot to not worry about winning or K/D so much, and just try your best or make fun out of it by blamming around.

They claimed before launch it would have such a mechanic lol.

I dont hate it, but imo if they do have JIP they need to change where you can join one game in progress then the remaining people in the post game lobby get thrown into another game in progress.

Join in progress means I can play with my brother before he gets bored of waiting to get in a game. I think that warrents it’s existance. I do think that it needs tuning and should be automaticly off when in ranked games. Then again I don’t think you should be able to cue up for ranked games unless you have a full party cuing in the first place. It just isn’t ranked then. Obvs lone wolves be lone wolves

At least give me an option to disable it. I don’t want to join an FFA game while being 8 kills down before it even starts.

Problem is, Stevo my internet doesn’t suck. I have a fast, direct connection so implying the problem is my own is incorrect. And I’m not saying they should remove this option completely, I’m asking them to give us an option to turn it off.

I’m in a bit of a dubio regarding join in progress.

On one side I can see why it could benefit joining friends.
I also like how it speeds up finding a game.

The flipside is that it doesn’t work well everywhere and it isn’t adjustable.

1: I personally think it should be tweaked a bit.
Either remove it from the relatively short Team Slayer/Objective/SWAT/Oddball/KotH playlists. Games there generally don’t take longer than 5-10 minutes and you often get put into such games which have been going on for a long time already.
Not fun, and not like it should be.

I would keep it as standard in BTB and possibly Dominion. BTB games tend to take longer, so joining when a game has been going on for 5 minutes isn’t going to hurt/annoy you (or at least me) that much.

2: If above scenario won’t happen, at least make the available JIP time a lot shorter in the shorter playlists. Spend a bit more time finding other incomplete parties between games, and then have perhaps 1 minute of JIP time.

3: Ideally JIP should be customizable.
For instance having these options would solve a lot of issues:

  • On
  • Off
  • Friends only (you can only join games of friends)
  • <1 minute (or <50 score) only

I guess such things won’t change quickly. And its not a major annoyance to me. I just don’t think it is optimal the way it is now.

JiP is causing more problems than solving any.

negatives:
-the pure strain on the servers; constantly having to search for games etc for the entire community is no doubt in my mind causing a lot of the terrible connections and latency issues.

-joining games on the losing side…by a large margin. e.g. 750-10 on ragnarok against a full team with 2 mantis, 2 banshee, 4 binary’s - all using camo

-very often joining games with your party being split across the 2 teams even though you search the playlist with the perfect number of players i.e searching with 4 in inf slayer and get 3 on 1 team, 1 on the other

-the fact you can’t see how long is left in a game in party details or how many kills/points are scored so it’s always a risk trying to join friends

-when host’s quit games, constantly causing black screens for everyone else and then finding you get booted from the game too, along with like 5 or 6 other players, leaving the game 2 vs 4 or something

positives:

…oh

If it’s taking you ten minutes to find a game… you’ve got connection problems.
I’m from the U.K. I have 45m/s line ping to my nearest speedtest.net host which is about 20 miles away. I have 3.5mb/s download. It takes me, at the very most, one minute to connect to a BTB game. My internet is crap for modern day standards… I’ve still got a ten times better internet connection than you by the current game examples.

Like I said, when the ranked playlists and true skill system gets released (as my understanding is; it hasn’t already) they shouldn’t use the JIP process for those games as it actually affects game results and player stats.
JIP should on the other hand be used for social gaming. A social player doesn’t care if he/she joins a match in progress, they only really care about running around and shooting people. If a game is already lost, fine… they’ll find that in 60 seconds time the game will likely be over and they’ll have spent the last 60 seconds playing the game instead of sitting around watching a lobby screen trying to locate players… What’s more fun? Watching a loading screen, or playing the game (Albeit it losing)?

Very well put, hyper.

Stevo: Get off it. It’s not my connection. Games never took this long in Halo 3 or Reach, it’s only in Halo 4 that it takes this long. And I’m not the only one who complains about this. It’s just a faulty system.

Add matchmaking search restrictions. Join in progress is fabulous, and there are tons of people that don’t mind it.

He’s right, guys, JIP must stay so his brother doesn’t get bored! (Obvious sarcasm), 343 should at least make it optional, i hate having to switch my network to my Xbox 360 and then back to Xbox LIVE everytime i join an already started game

Last night I started in BTB with the words “Five Kills Remaining!”

I once joined a game of Grifball in which the score was 4-1 for the other team, and just as I spawned they scored the final point. I got JIPped!

i once joined a dominion match where it was 30-390

QFT. God for bid we bore this man’s brother.

i think one would be good but i don’t really see how it could work
