trying to understand the motives of the covie

Weren’t the elites the least religious of the covenant forces? From the books I remember them being extremely warlike and proud. Doesn’t that basically contradict them bending over and taking it from the rear from the diadect?

Nope Didact in their eyes is a god and most religious groups do anything for their god/s

It just doesn’t make sense to me. The senghelli where the most reasonable and wise of the covenant races. They secretly knew the great journey was a fake. They only fought for the covenant out of pride and respect. They where unstoppable.

> They secretly knew the great journey was a fake. They only fought for the covenant out of pride and respect. They where unstoppable.

They didn’t secretly know the great journey was fake, they were deceived by the prophets until the great schism broke out if i recall correctly.

Some bealived with the Arbiter some didn’t. In Juls case he pretends to bealive, to uphold his power.

That’s not true at all. None of the members of the Covenant knew the Great Journey was “fake”, not even the High Prophets. The Elites were the most dedicated both to the war and the religion.

After the war, many of the Covenant species stopped believing in the Great Journey, but many still believed that the Forerunners were still gods.

Basically some of them are religious fanatics. It’s like real life to a point where some of us believe something and others believe something else. We all have different viewpoints and not all of us follow the same banner.

> None of the members of the Covenant knew the Great Journey was “fake”, not even the High Prophets

Thats actually not true the high prophets knew their religion was entirely false.

In 2525, it was “consulted”, or rather interrogated, by the Minister of Fortitude and the Vice Minister of Tranquility concerning the large number of Forerunner artifacts or “Holy Relics” on Harvest. In a shocking revelation Mendicant Bias revealed that the “Holy Relics” were actually humans and that the Covenant faith was based on an age-old mistranslation. The glyph on the Luminary was mistaken as “reclamation” when it truly meant “Reclaimer”. This had the potential to completely undermine the Covenant’s unity and faith. A political revolution ensued to prevent this and, ultimately, led to the Human-Covenant war.

They knew that the Humans were related to the Forerunners in some way, but they didn’t know that the Forerunners were killed by the Halo rings, nor did they know that the Halo rings were super weapons.

> They knew that the Humans were related to the Forerunners in some way, but they didn’t know that the Forerunners were killed by the Halo rings, nor did they know that the Halo rings were super weapons.

If humans were related to the forunners than that would imply that the forerunners didn’t become gods when they activated the halo array thus undermining their entire religion and the great journey.

If their entire religion was incorrect and humans are actually the inheritors to all things forunner than the prophets would have to give all their power to humanity. The human-covenant war is simply an attempt by the prophets to hold onto power while using religion as their excuse to wage war.

From what I understand, the Prophets thought that the Humans may have been Forerunners who were left behind by the activation of the rings, which would mean that not all members of the Covenant would become gods like they had believed. If the rest of the Covenant found out that some of them would be left behind, then their empire would fall apart.

But like I said, they didn’t know that the Forerunners had died. They still believed that at least some of them had become gods or that they would become gods if the rings were activated. They didn’t know that the rings would kill them all.

The elites were probably the most religious species, actually; the drones, jackals and hunters could care less about religion. The brutes are arguably the most religious, though they may be considered equally religious in a more zealous way – while the grunts could be considered less religious, or perhaps equally religious in a less active role. Whether or not grunts believed in the faith of the Covenant, they were in no position to make decisions based on that faith.

Religion and warlike tendencies aren’t mutually exclusive. Sangheili were always faithful to the prophets, until their betrayal.

As for the Didact’s rule over the Storm, the Storm’s origins are on a colony that revered him in particular; though there’s no direct confirmation, I believe it’s reasonable to believe that the Storm’s ideologies are largely those of that first colony Jul started the faction on.

The sangheili we fight in Halo 4 should not be taken to represent the general species. Scratch that; no single group of sangheili should be taken to represent their whole species. Life’s more complicated than that.

> From what I understand, the Prophets thought that the Humans may have been Forerunners who were left behind by the activation of the rings, which would mean that not all members of the Covenant would become gods like they had believed

This statement shows that there is doubt as to what would happen if the activated the halo array. The prophets knew their entire religion was false so there would be a great chance that the great journey was also false. There was always going to be doubt as to what happened but the prophets more than likely deceived themselves into believing their own lies to hold on to power.

> If the rest of the Covenant found out that some of them would be left behind, then their empire would fall apart.

This is false, it was very well known that people can be left behind, the prophet of truth told this to the arbiter during his trial and covenant didn’t fall apart so…

If the members of the covenant found out that their gods(forerunners or humans the inheritors) were alive(which humanity is) and didn’t become gods when halo was activated than their entire belief in the great journey is false, which would tear the covenant apart.

This is a very important line.

There’s no reason to believe aliens are less diverse than humans. Especially considering they exist on multiple planets, its possible for even greater diversity culturally than what we have on earth.

Also, the Remnant/Storm originate from elites from a colony that was somehow in the dark about the whole great schism thing. They were religious, but weren’t really into the whole “kill the humans” and sent few warriors to the conflict.

Effectively, Jul told them the stinking humans were threatening Sanghelios, and that he could bring them to god…which he pretty much did.

Which is complete and utter -Yoink- as far as plot devices go. Also, the Remnant come from multiple colonies on the frontier of Sangheili space.
